Manchester derby: ‘Man United players must prove to fans they care’ – David Seaman blasts Red Devils stars for lack of effort

David Seaman has slammed Manchester United players for ‘downing tools’ and says they must ‘prove to fans they care’ with a strong performance against Manchester City.

The neighbouring rivals will go head-to-head in the latest Manchester derby on Wednesday night, with plenty at stake for both sides.

The Manchester rivals’ last meeting, earlier this season, ended in a 3-1 win to City

Three points for Man City will put them top of the Premier League table and make them favourites for the title, while a home victory for United will boost their bid for a top-four finish.

There is an added element of ironic drama for the Red Devils – United could put a huge dent in City’s title hopes with a win at Old Trafford, although that could also potentially hand the crown to old rivals Liverpool.

However, that appears unlikely given their current form.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men have lost six of their last eight games in all competitions, with their previous league game ending in a 4-0 defeat at Everton.

And Seaman believes Wednesday’s derby could be make-or-break for a number of the United stars’ futures.

“I watched them over the weekend and it was like the team from when Jose was there,” the ex-Arsenal, City and England goalkeeper told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.

“It’s almost like they’ve downed tools. All of a sudden it looks like they’re all playing for themselves and not as a team, which is what it used to be.

“When Ole took over he got that confidence back in them and they were all playing together.

“But now, again, they’re getting outrun on the field. It’s not looking good.

“You can’t just turn it on when you want.

“They can only improve after their last performance.

“They must really show to their fans what they’re capable of now.

“It’s getting down to the nitty-gritty now and there will be a lot of questions asked of a lot of the big players there.”
