Montenegro fail to overturn UEFA ban following racist abuse of England players during Euro 2020 qualifier

Montenegro’s appeal against playing their next home match behind closed doors after some supporters racially abused England players has been rejected by UEFA.

Raheem Sterling, Danny Rose and Callum Hudson-Odoi were subject to racist taunts by groups of home fans within the Gradski Stadion in Podgorica during the Three Lions’ Euro 2020 qualifying win in March.

Montenegro were subsequently ordered by UEFA to play their June 7 qualifier at home to Kosovo in an empty stadium, and the original ruling has been upheld.

A UEFA statement read: “The appeal lodged by Football Association of Montenegro has been dismissed.”

Sterling celebrated his goal in the game in front of the Montenegrin fans, who were heard directing monkey chants to England’s black players.

Further charges, carrying fines amounting to 20,000 euros (£17,260), were handed down by the governing body to Montenegro for the setting off of fireworks, throwing objects on to the pitch, crowd disturbances and stairways being blocked.

Wilson, 27, was linked with a £50million move to Stamford Bridge in the January transfer window, despite signing a new four-year deal with Bournemouth last summer.

“I signed a long-term contract, I’m happy down there – I’m playing football,” he told the Daily Star.

“I’m happiest when I’m on the pitch. I never want to go and sort of be somewhere that I’m not going to play.

“I never want to see myself not playing at Bournemouth even, being on the bench and things like that.

“Any player has aspirations to play for their country, like I’ve managed to do thankfully, and play in the Champions League – different big occasions and big stages.

“I’ve been linked (with big clubs) from a young age when I’m doing well – so I tend not to buy into it really.

“It can sway you off what you need to do and take away your focus.”

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe refused to entertain any offers for Wilson in January.

â€Å“I’ve been told about the speculation, it’s not something I seek to read,” he said.

â€Å“It’s a waste of time for me to do so. It’s business as normal. Callum has been bright and bubbly this week so no problems there.

How Chelsea were able to catch the racist fans who abused Mohamed Salah

Chelsea’s swift response when it emerged more of their supporters had shamed football has been widely applauded.

Ahead of the Europa League quarter-final against Slavia Prague, six travelling supporters filmed themselves singing ‘Salah is a bomber’ in a Czech pub.

Three of the fans were prevented from attending the match and talkSPORT host Jim White has explained how the club were able to identify them so quickly.

The video, which circulated on social media on Thursday afternoon, was picked up by Chelsea̢۪s security team.

Ever since Blues fans prevented a black man from boarding a Paris train in 2017, the club have run collection points for European trips – where fans must present passports in return for their ticket.

The club were therefore able to spot the culprits from the video and void their tickets, before notifying local police.

Half of the six fans decided not to attend the match, but the other three were immediately turned away with Czech police ready on the scene.

And it has been revealed to talkSPORT that Chelsea have also identified the three men who didn’t show up – and efforts are being made to track them down.

Football: Man City inflict more pain on Man United to go back on top

MANCHESTER (REUTERS) - Manchester City took a big step towards retaining the Premier League title with a 2-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Wednesday (April 24) sending them back to the top of the table.
City have 89 points, one more than rivals Liverpool, with both teams having three games to play – and none of them against top six opponents.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer̢۪s side remain in sixth place with 64 points, outside the Champions League qualification slots as the early promise of the Norwegian̢۪s reign dissipates.
United are surely keen to get this season over with and begin the rebuilding they need – they have now lost seven games out of their last nine in all competitions and were outclassed after the break by City’s composed, intelligent passing and movement.
Second-half goals from Bernardo Silva and Leroy Sane ensured a comfortable win for City, who have now won 11 straight league games.
The form book suggests City should win the title, much to the frustration of Liverpool who have lost just once this season.
However, City captain Vincent Kompany was not getting carried away.

â€Å“Nothing is played out yet. Burnley is a difficult away game next and there is plenty to play for, both for us and Liverpool. We will deal with the other games in the next days,” said the Belgian.
â€Å“We need three wins. We cannot expect the opponent to drop points.”
United, smarting from their 4-0 hammering at Everton on Sunday, at least played with aggression and energy in the scoreless first half but created little beyond an optimistic long-range effort from Marcus Rashford.
City were slow to find top gear although the irrepressible Silva tested David De Gea with a thundering drive and Raheem Sterling shot straight at the Spanish keeper after dribbling his way to space inside the box.
Guardiola was forced to adjust his lineup six minutes after the interval when Brazilian holding midfielder Fernandinho went off injured and Sane was introduced.
But it was no surprise that Portuguese winger Bernardo Silva was the man who broke through.
He picked the ball up on the right flank and cut inside on to his left foot, surprising De Gea with a low drive that sneaked in the bottom corner in the 54th minute.
United̢۪s night was summed up when some rare shaky defending from City saw the ball loop towards the back post but Jesse Lingard mis-kicked completely and the opportunity had gone.
City then doubled their lead – Fred giving the ball away in midfield, Sterling breaking forward before feeding Sane on the left with the German’s powerful drive flying in off the outstretched leg of De Gea, who probably should have done better.
â€Å“There is a difference in quality. That is why they are top and we are where we are,” said Solskjaer.
â€Å“They have set the standard. Living in Manchester we cannot be happy with that. It is up to us to close that gap and overtake them,” he said.

A 1-0 victory over Manchester City came in the Champions League quarter-final first leg on Tuesday.

Rose gave away a first-half penalty, which was awarded by VAR, but Sergio Aguero failed to score the resultant spot-kick as it was saved by Hugo Lloris.

“Last week when we played Palace, the atmosphere was brilliant,” full-back Rose said.

“And when Hugo saved the penalty, my ears were buzzing because of the fans and how loud it was.

“The plan is to get the stadium back to being a fortress. If you remember the last season at the old White Hart Lane, we were unbeaten. That’s the plan now.

One away goal at the Etihad Stadium could put Spurs right in the driving seat and Rose thinks manager Mauricio Pochettino will tell his players to go and attack.

“It’s not in the manager’s DNA to sit back and soak up pressure and hit teams on the counter-attack,” Rose added.

“That’s not his game. He wants us to show our identity from the first minute, and it’ll be the same.

“We’ll go there to try and win. That’ll be the plan. He wants everybody to show their character, whether we’re losing or winning.

“And I can tell everybody now the plan will be not to go there and sit back because that’s not him.

“That’s not us. The tie’s not over, and we’ll go there next week fully looking to win the game and progress to the semi-finals.”

Harry Kane England debut: Where are the Three Lions who played against Lithuania in March 2015 now?

In the four years since Harry Kane made his England debut, he has become captain, won a World Cup Golden Boot and reached the semi-finals of football’s biggest tournament.

It was in a 4-0 Euro 2016 qualifying win against Lithuania on 27 March 2015 when he made his senior Three Lions bow, a game in which he also scored moments after coming on as a substitute.

The Tottenham striker, at the time of writing, is just eight England goals short of Alan Shearer’s haul of 30 and it is only a matter of time before he surpasses him and many fans will believe it won’t be long until he breaks Wayne Rooney’s record total of 53.

The England team has changed considerably since Kane’s debut and this is perhaps the most exciting England squad in a long time.

talkSPORT.com looks at the line-up back then and where those players are now.

Joe Hart (Burnley)

The former Manchester City goalkeeper’s fall from grace has been well documented. A poor showing at Euro 2016, Hart returned to City, only to discover he was not trusted by manager Pep Guardiola for a perceived inability to play from the back with his feet.

He was then sent on loan to Torino in Italy, but his performances were far from impressive. Spells with West Ham and Burnley followed and he has not featured for the Clarets since Boxing Day.

Hart’s career has gone downhill in recent years

11

Hart’s career has gone downhill in recent years

Nathaniel Clyne (on loan at Bournemouth)

After proving his capabilities at Southampton, the full-back earned a move to Liverpool and the following season he helped them reach the Europa League final.

A back injury prior to the 2017/18 season ruled him out for much of that campaign and he would make only three appearances.

After struggling to regain his place, he was loaned out to Bournemouth in January 2019, but Clyne has not played for England since 2016.

Clyne is now at Bournemouth on loan

11

Gary Cahill (Chelsea)

The treatment of the Chelsea defender under Maurizio Sarri has been pretty wretched to say the least. Frozen out of the side, the Blues captain has not featured since December and has only played once as a substitute in the league.

He led Chelsea to FA Cup and Premier League success in the previous two seasons and played once at the 2018 World Cup.

Cahill has been out of favour at Chelsea this season

11

Phil Jones (Manchester United)

A man of many facial expressions, Jones is still going strong at Manchester United and recently signed an improved contract to remain with the club until 2023.

Since 2015, he has won the FA Cup and the Europa League.

Jones is still an ever-present for Man United

11

Jones is still an ever-present for Man United

Leighton Baines (Everton)

The long-serving defender has found his role reduced in the Everton line-up under Marco Silva, with Lucas Digne taking his place.

Now in the twilight years of his career, the 34-year-old still remains a wonderful crosser and passer of a ball and the match against Lithuania in 2015 was his last in an England shirt.

Baines has not played for England since this match

11

Jordan Henderson (Liverpool)

Since the departure of Steven Gerrard, the former Sunderland midfielder has been appointed as Liverpool captain and this season has helped them get to within touching distance of winning a first Premier League title.

He is still a regular for England under Gareth Southgate.

Henderson is now Liverpool captain

11

Michael Carrick (Retired)

After 12 years at Manchester United, Carrick called time on his playing career at the end of 2017/18 season and is now a key part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer̢۪s backroom staff.

He won the last of his 34 caps for England in 2015 and described playing for the Three Lions as ‘almost depressing’ in an exclusive interview with talkSPORT.

Fabian Delph (Manchester City)

Having spent six years with Aston Villa, Delph joined Manchester City in July 2015. Although not a regular starter, he has proven to be a valuable and versatile member of Pep Guardiola’s side.

Delph earned himself a place in Southgate’s squad last summer and played twice in Russia.

Raheem Sterling (Manchester City)

Another player to have moved to the Etihad in 2015, Sterling won his first Premier League with the club last season.

Impressive this campaign, he has scored 19 goals and also found the net twice in the famous 3-2 win over Spain last October. Sterling actually opening his England account against Lithuania before Kane got his goal.

Wayne Rooney (DC United)

Now plying his trade in the USA with DC United, Rooney went on to become both England (53) and Manchester United’s (253) record goalscorer.

Having left Everton in 2004, he returned for a season in 2017 and added one final cap to his total, when he faced the United States in November to promote the Wayne Rooney Foundation.

In Kane’s debut game, Rooney opened the scoring after just six minutes.

Danny Welbeck (Arsenal)

The former Red Devils forward is now at Arsenal, but has had an unfortunate time with injuries.

Knee problems ruled him out for much of the 2015/16 season and he then suffered a groin injury last season.

Under Unai Emery, Welbeck has been restricted to just eight league matches after landing awkwardly on his ankle. He was the other scorer against Lithuania in 2015.

Substitutes

Ross Barkley for Henderson (71 minutes)

Now at Chelsea, Barkley has endured an indifferent spell at Stamford Bridge.

Falling out of favour with previous manager Antonio Conte, he returned fitter and leaner in the summer under Sarri and has played almost every game. He has shown glimpses of his talent, but is frustratingly inconsistent.

Kane for Rooney (72 minutes)

Since scoring in this game for England, the first of 20, Kane has gone on to win consecutive Premier League Golden Boot awards and was named England Player of the Year in both 2017 and 2018. His six goals at the World Cup meant he finished as top scorer despite losing to Croatia in the semi-finals.

Theo Walcott for Welbeck (77 minutes)

A 12-year stay at Arsenal came to end in 2018 and the England attacker moved to Everton.

Now 30, Walcott continues to fuel critics with his lack of end product and poor performances on Merseyside have yet to endear him to the Toffees faithful.
