Football: Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford key to Manchester United's future: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

LONDON (REUTERS) - Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is determined to keep Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford at Old Trafford, saying the pair are vital to his plans of building a team "worthy of the history of the club".
While on international duty, United's record signing Pogba said it would be a "dream" to play for Zinedine Zidane's Real Madrid, while Rashford has been linked with a move to Barcelona in the British media.
"They are vital for our future," Solskjaer, who was named United's permanent manager on Thursday (March 28), told reporters.
"You have got loads of players who you can build a team around and those are two that you asked me about."
Since Solskjaer took over as United's caretaker in December, Pogba has enjoyed the more freedom and tactical flexibility to become one of the most influential players in the Premier League, recording eight goals and six assists.
Rashford, meanwhile, has become the Norwegian manager's first-choice striker and the 21-year-old has responded with eight goals in 18 appearances across all competitions.
When asked if the pair can realise their ambition at United, Solskjaer added: "I would believe so. That's our aim as a club, to be achieving what we have done in the past. That is the expectations here.
"Of course, we are hoping to build a team strong enough (to be) worthy of the history of the club."

United's short-term target is to secure a Premier League top-four finish and qualification for the Champions League but Solskjaer wants the club to target the league title next season.
Club captain Antonio Valencia and Matteo Darmian could leave at the end of the campaign while United are linked with England wingers Jadon Sancho and Callum Hudson-Odoi, at Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea respectively, and Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly.
United are expected to back Solskjaer with substantial funds to rebuild the squad but the Norwegian said he would not spend recklessly.
"People who know me know that I will use that in a good way," he said.
"We have a plan with the club, they have scouted players for longer than I have been here, and we have players that we need to keep. We will not spend money just to spend money."

Dani Parejo: From QPR to Spain’s most consistent midfielder – Valencia’s captain is delivering on the promise Alfredo Di Stéfano saw in him at Real Madrid

Some players explode into life and already dazzle among the best as teenagers. Others chart more of a steady, gradual rise.

The latter is the case for Dani Parejo, now establishing himself as one of La Liga’s most reliable at the age of 29.

Despite his prolonged path to the very top, no less than Alfredo Di Stéfano predicted the midfielder would be one of the best when few others seemed to believe it.

Parejo was the apple of the Madrid legend’s eye, and the late Argentinian insisted he was the finest player he had ever seen in Los Blancos’ youth system. When the Spanish giants disagreed and sent the then youngster on a humbling loan spell to QPR in the Championship in 2008, Di Stéfano stopped going to B team (Castilla) games in protest.

Di Stefano didn’t agree with Parejo’s loan to Queens Park Rangers.

5

Di Stefano didn’t agree with Parejo’s loan to Queens Park Rangers.

Di Stéfano’s vision ultimately proved to be sound: Parejo has now leapfrogged the likes of Koke and Saúl in the Spain pecking order thanks to an excellent club season.

For a while though, it was touch and go. Capable of truly brilliant moments, for years he also lacked the consistency to fulfil his true potential, not always as fit and sharp as someone without natural pace needs to be in order to cope in midfield.

Inconsistency is what defined the early part of his time at Valencia. The first real high coincided with the arrival of Nuno Espirito Santo as coach in 2014. The Portuguese took advantage of Parejo’s natural ability in front of goal, giving him room to surge into space behind the striker and score 11 from midfield. That helped a revitalised and rejuvenated Los Che return to the Champions League positions for the first time since 2012.

But the lows were particularly low. In Valencia’s horrific 2015-16 season (the one with the Gary Neville experiment) Parejo became a scapegoat for everything that was going wrong at the club. He was stripped of the captaincy by Neville, and Valencia finished as close to the relegation zone as they did the European spots.

Parejo trained alongside the likes of Fabio Cannavaro, Raul, and Sergio Ramos at Real Madrid.

5

Parejo trained alongside the likes of Fabio Cannavaro, Raul, and Sergio Ramos at Real Madrid.

Things didn’t get any better in the subsequent year. Sections of the fanbase grew increasingly frustrated with a player they perceived to not be trying hard enough, and everything suggested Parejo would leave the Mestalla a fallen hero, the Madrid native actively looking for a way out. Then, for the second time in his career, someone saw something when others didn’t.

Marcelino taking charge in 2017 marked the beginning of a return to the top for Los Che, and more than any other, Parejo is the player he has built it around. Despite carrying out a sweeping dressing room clearout, the Asturian saw something worth fighting for when the midfielder was at his worst moment, convincing him to stay and making him the captain once more. Parejo has paid off that faith in spades.

Parejo celebrates scoring for Valencia last season.

5

Parejo celebrates scoring for Valencia last season.

Confidence and the mental side of things is certainly important, but there is a tactical explanation too: Marcelino has firmly established Parejo’s position as a deep-lying playmaker with license to make late runs into the area (think Xabi Alonso), and that has allowed him to truly excel.

With seven league goals he is the highest-scoring central midfielder in La Liga this season. For some perspective, next on the list is Santi Cazorla, with four, then Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic with three each. All are higher profile figures than Parejo, none have been as consistent.

And even if his spell in England was brief there is certainly a touch of the English style to his game, box-to-box and specialising in catching opposition defenders out by arriving late from the third line to either finish in the area or drill off a shot from distance.

The captain is absolutely indispensable for his coach, playing in 25 of 28 league matchdays so far.

Sergio Ramos is the only captain from the other Spanish powerhouses to have played more league games (26).

Parejo in action this season for Valencia.

The first sign we were seeing the best of Parejo was his leadership role in getting Valencia back into the Champions League last year, but it is his repeated excellence this year, even when other members of the team have struggled to deliver, that truly confirms it.

A key defensive piece who has recovered possession more than any other outfield player for Los Che, he has also been their most dangerous creative threat, averaging 2.5 key passes per game and 85% pass completion – that’s particularly impressive considering his habit of receiving the ball in congested areas.

This year marks Valencia’s centenary, and it could yet prove to be one of the best. Fourth place is still within touching distance, a spot in a first cup final in 10 years has already been booked, and a Europa League quarter-final against relegation strugglers Villarreal offers a favourable path to European glory.

Be it David Albelda, Ruben Baraja or David Silva, Los Che’s best modern teams have always featured great midfielders. If they are indeed celebrating come the summer, they can thank the next in that lineage for his major contribution.

Di Stéfano would be proud of what Parejo has become.

The 13 Premier League stars who have played every minute of the season, including Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester United aces

Playing in the Premier League is no mean feat, it is after all considered the most competitive league in the world.

To feature week-in week-out, for every single match is a notable achievement, especially given the demands and rigours of the top-flight.

14

A knock or a niggle can rule a player out for a game, or see a superstar substituted, while suspensions are always a risk, whether through a sending off or an accumulation of cautions.

Some stars, though, are both relied upon by their team and able to avoid absences and play every minute of every game.

But who are these ever-present players, talkSPORT.com takes a look.

Ben Mee (Burnley – 2790 minutes)

The defender has been an consistent feature in defence for Sean Dyche’s team and should he keep up his appearances, looks on course to beat his Premier League personal tally of 34 matches in 2016/17.

14

Jordan Pickford (Everton – 2790 minutes)

The England goalkeeper may have had his critics this season following his World Cup heroics, but he remains Everton’s first choice between the sticks.

Barring injury or something unexpected, Pickford should play every single match for the Toffees for a second successive season.

Kasper Schmeichel (Leicester City  – 2790 minutes)

Goalkeepers are rarely rotated and it is usually a position managers will leave well alone, once they have found the right fit.

Schmeichel has been No.1 since his move in 2011 and that does not look like changing any time soon.

Alisson (Liverpool – 2790 minutes)

The Brazilian has been a key reason for Liverpool’s title challenge this season.

His arrival has solved the goalkeeping problem that was causing Jurgen Klopp considerable worry in recent seasons and he has the most clean sheets in the Premier League this season with 15.

Martin Dubravka (Newcastle United – 2790 minutes)

It was a masterstroke from Rafael Benitez to sign the Slovakian when he did, as he is now one of the Premier League’s most consistent goalkeepers and the interest from some of Europe’s elite, such as Juventus, is a testament to his talent and growing reputation.

Lukasz Fabianski – (West Ham – 2790 minutes)

The Hammers could not have asked for a more reliable player between the sticks.

Fabianski has only missed three matches in the past five seasons, four of those with Swansea City and he has already featured in every match for West Ham this campaign.

Luka Milivojević (Crystal Palace – 2700 minutes)

While Wilfried Zaha is rightly considered the Eagles most influential player, Milivojević is not too far behind himself, in terms of importance and is enjoying another impressive season.

The Serbian controls the tempo in midfield and is one of the most efficient penalty takers in world football.

Ederson (Manchester City – 2700 minutes)

Now in his second season at the Etihad, Ederson looks as if he has been playing in the Premier League for much longer, such is the ease with which he plays.

Comfortable with the ball at his feet, a modern essential to play in goal, it could be another season he finishes with a league title.

David De Gea (Manchester United – 2700 minutes)

The introduction in recent seasons of Ederson and Alisson to the Premier League has increased the competition among the Premier League’s goalkeepers, but for some De Gea still remains the best.

On his day he is capable of incredible stops and has proved time and time again to be virtually unbeatable. Just ask Tottenham!

Ben Foster (Watford  – 2700 minutes)

Troy Deeney recently praised the former Manchester United goalkeeper: “The guy eats s***, trains twice a week, turns up on a Saturday and is unbelievable.”

While few, other than his team-mates, can vouch for his diet, whatever he is eating clearly has not hampered his displays come the weekend.

Cesar Azpilicueta (Chelsea – 2700 minutes)

It may not have been his best season in a Chelsea shirt, but the Spaniard remains a figure of consistency and is one of the first names on the team-sheet.

He has missed three league matches in the past four seasons and was trusted to play a vital role by the likes of Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, during Chelsea‘s title winning campaigns.

Neil Etheridge (Cardiff – 2700 minutes)

As far as first seasons go in the Premier League, it has been a respectable one for Etheridge and while Cardiff are in the relegation zone, the 6ft 2 shot-stopper, has earned a reputation for saving penalties.

Etheridge saved two penalties in his first two games this season.

Conor Coady (Wolverhampton Wanderers – 2700 minutes)

The former Liverpool defender has been excellent for a Wolves side in contention for European qualification.

The 40-year-old was rushed to hospital after being struck by a vehicle at around 10am in Portals, Mallorca, Diario de Mallorca report.

He was then taken to Son Espases hospital, having reportedly ‘hit his face hard against the ground’ near the Agora school.

Scaloni’s condition was then assessed and he has now been discharged from hospital.

Eleven Sports hit by poor take-up rate in UK

LONDON • Eleven Sports, the self-styled "Netflix of Sports" controlled by Leeds United owner Andrea Radrizzani, could be facing closure in the UK & Ireland after failing to attract enough subscribers.
The service, launched less than four months ago, has the UK rights to sports including Italy's Serie A, Spain's LaLiga and the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
Eleven Sports, which was forced to stop its controversial practice of broadcasting European games on Saturday afternoons after pressure from football stakeholders, is aiming to renegotiate rights deals to avoid pulling the plug on its service.
The situation has been created by the UFC triggering an exit clause on its exclusive deal with Eleven Sports, which was due to begin next month, after Eleven Sports was unable to secure promised distribution via pay-TV platforms including Sky, Virgin Media and BT.
Eleven Sports is aiming to renegotiate its sports rights deals at a much cheaper rate to try and continue with a much smaller, commercially viable operation in the UK.
"Without carriage agreements with the existing platforms, alongside the challenges posed by rampant piracy, the current market dynamics in the UK & Ireland are very hostile for new entrants," said a spokesman for Eleven Sports.
"We are in discussion with our rights partners, LaLiga and IMG, about how we can restructure our existing agreements in order to continue our current OTT (streaming) service."
UFC, the popular mixed martial arts competition, is understood to be back in talks with the previous rights holder BT about a new broadcast deal.
Eleven Sports is preparing to hand back the TV rights for Serie A to IMG, which acts as agent, which would allow them to be resold.
The streaming service secured the rights to Serie A in July in a three-year deal, ending BT's six-year association with Italy's top league. In May, Eleven Sports struck a three-year deal with LaLiga, ending Sky's 20-year association with Spain's top flight.
Eleven Sports has attracted only about 50,000 subscriptions since its UK launch in August, according to the Telegraph, which broke the news of the streaming service's difficulties. Eleven Sports charges £5.99 (S$10.40) a month. Rival sports streaming service Dazn, which is owned by the Warner Music owner and Spotify investor Len Blavatnik, has said it will not launch in the UK because the market is too competitive.
Eleven Sports, which also operates in markets including Poland and Portugal, is controlled via the holding company Aser which in turn is controlled by Radrizzani.
In April, the London offices of IMG and MP & Silva, the sports rights agency co-founded by Radrizzani, were raided by officials from the European Commission investigating potential sports rights cartels.

West Ham transfer news: Moussa Marega expected to join Hammers with Porto selling forward for £30m this summer

West Ham are set to sign Porto striker Moussa Marega in a £30million deal, according to reports.

Marega, the forward, has long wished to play in England, and it appears he is close to securing his dream transfer to the Premier League.

Marega has netted 11 league goals this season, a big decrease on his 22-goal haul last term

Record claim Porto have agreed to cash in on the 28-year-old Mali international this summer, after two relatively prolific seasons which have yielded 45 goals in less than 100 appearances for the Liga NOS club.

It is said West Ham tried to sign Marega last summer but failed with their approaches, though the striker’s ‘fate’ this time around is reported to still be the Hammers – despite interest from other parties.

Marega will leave Porto in a deal worth just over £30million (€35m), which is the value of the release clause written in the contract he signed last September.

Manuel Pellegrini is known to want to improve his attacking options this summer, with reports earlier this week linking West Ham with Maxi Gomez, the Celta Vigo forward, after failed January approaches for the Uruguay international.
