Tottenham star and ex-Liverpool ace named in Phil Neville’s dream Manchester United XI

Phil Neville has named his dream Manchester United XI for next season – and there’s some big-money signings included.

The former Red Devil, 42, was asked to pick his United dream team on TV show Premier League Today – and he wants four fresh faces at Old Trafford.

Neville, the former United star and current England women’s manager, wants one defender to be signed and unsurprisingly it is Real Madrid and France centre-back Raphael Varane.

The World Cup winner reportedly wants out of the Spanish capital for a fresh challenge – and United would represent exactly that.

Varane has been heavily linked with a move to United in recent years and a pairing with the revitalised Victor Lindelof, alongside full-backs Luke Shaw and Diogo Dalot, could form a solid back line for years to come.

Therefore Neville would rather Chris Smalling was axed from next seaason’s line-up.

Neville wants two new additions alongside Paul Pogba in the United midfield – meaning both Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera would be axed from the XI.

He would back a move for Tottenham Hotspur and England midfielder Eric Dier to take up the holding midfield role.

Dier already has invaluable experience at the highest level for Spurs and at just 25 years old, he could be a mainstay in front of United’s back line for the foreseeable future.

Neville also wants to see Barcelona playmaker Philippe Coutinho make his way to Manchester.

The former Liverpool star has struggled to settle for the Spanish giants, with just four goals and two assists in 26 La Liga appearances this season.

There have been numerous reports linking him with a move back to the Premier League and Coutinho himself has reportedly informed a number of Spanish players in the United squad that he wants to resurrect his career in Manchester.

Finally, Neville wants to see Gareth Bale sign for the Red Devils.

The Welshman’s future at the Bernebeu is looking bleak following the return of Zinedine Zidane as Los Blancos chief.

In Zidane’s first stint in charge at the Bernebeu he often preferred Isco in his starting team – and a move back to the Premier League to get more first team action may be desired for Bale as he reaches the tail end of his career.

Bale has been linked with a move away from Madrid

Bale would occupy the right-wing position in the front trio, with Marcus Rashford continuing through the middle and Anthony Martial on the left.

Jesse Lingard and Romelu Lukaku would therefore be benched or be sold in Neville’s set-up.

Aston Villa forced to pay £4million to unwanted flops after winning Championship Play-Off Final at Wembley – reports

Aston Vila will be forced to shell out £4million to a host of unwanted flops after beating Derby County in the Championship Play-Off Final.

The Vilans secured a 2-1 win at Wembley over the Rams to end their three year exile from the Premier League.

And while the game itself is reportedly worth £170million, it seems Villa will be forced to make a host of lucrative pay-outs instantly.

Aston Villa could be hit with an unwanted £4million promotion bill

The Daily Mirror report a host of players are set for a hike in their wages if promotion is achieved – despite playing little or no part in achieving it.

Ross McCormack, Scott Hogan, Gary Gardner, James Bree and Henri Lansbury have made a total of 17 league appearances between them during this campaign.

Only former Arsenal man Lansbury has remained at the club, while the rest are out on loan.

Scotland international McCormack is set to see his wages skyrocket to £70,000-a-week if the club do go up, despite spending the season with the Central Coast Mariners alongside Usain Bolt and Motherwell.

Meanwhile, midfielder Gardner is also in line for a pay rise, despite spending the season on loan at rivals Birmingham City.

Both are out of contract at the end of next season, but Lansbury and Hogan are under contract until 2021.

The potential wage-bill woes arise from commitments made during the reign of former owner Dr Tony Xia, who sanctioned a spending spree shortly after taking control from previous incumbent Randy Lerner.

Tottenham Hotspur fans were going wild on Twitter ahead of their clash with Manchester City as they realised Vincent Janssen had returned to the matchday squad.

Janssen was famed for his inability to score from open play after a £18million move from AZ Alkmaar but with Harry Kane still out, Mauricio Pochettino has now turned to a player he exiled.

The Argentine boss even took away the player’s No.9 shirt at the beginning of the season but now he’s fit again he’s been called upon at a vital moment.

And Spurs fans rejoiced at the news and believe the Dutch forward could go from hero to zero at the Etihad Stadium. You can see what they said on Twitter below.

Jimmy Shan: West Brom confirm caretaker manager will remain in charge for rest of season

Caretaker manager Jimmy Shan will remain in charge of West Brom for the remainder of the season, the Championship club have confirmed.

The 40-year-old has overseen four wins in six games since being appointed caretaker when the Baggies sacked Darren Moore last month.

While there was never an official approach, Albion wanted Preston boss Alex Neil but the Scot signed a new three-year deal at Deepdale on Sunday.

Shan said: “I’m happy that we can now move forward with clear planning and direction for the remainder of the season.

“It won’t change the work ethic and application of the players and the staff but it enables us to crack on with a clear target in our sights.

“From a personal point of view there is huge, huge pride to be given the responsibility. For me it is a chance to see the journey through that began at the end of last season.

“I’ve heard it said that with two or three extra games we may have stayed up last season. My aim is to make sure we get those extra games at the end of this season and complete our road back to the Premier League.”

Albion are fourth in the Championship and they remain on course for the play-offs with four games remaining after beating Neil’s Preston 4-1 at The Hawthorns on Saturday.

“Jimmy has fully earned this opportunity to take us through to the end of the campaign,” technical director Luke Dowling told the club’s website.
