Graham Potter: Brighton confirm appointment of head coach from Swansea on four-year deal

Brighton and Hove Albion have named Graham Potter as their new head coach to succeed Chris Hughton, the Premier League club have confirmed.

Potter leaves Swansea after just a single season to take up his new post in the top flight, signing a four-year deal with the Seagulls.

He had two years remaining on his deal at the Liberty Stadium and Swansea offered him fresh terms in a bid to ward off Brighton’s interest.

However, after the Championship side initially rejected Brighton’s approach, former Ostersund boss Potter has made the move to the south coast.

Potter said: “I was sold by the long-term vision and passion shown by Tony Bloom, Paul Barber and Dan Ashworth.

“The ideas and plans they have for the future of this football club excited me; I am thrilled and honoured to be a part of it.

“This club has been on an incredible journey and my aim along with Bjorn [Hamberg], Kyle [Macauley] and Billy [Reid], is to ensure the great work that has gone before us is built on, as we strive to cement our place in the Premier League for many years to come.”

Appointed last summer, Potter guided the Swans to a 10th-place finish in the Championship last season.

Brighton chairman Tony Bloom had wanted to appoint a new coach as quickly as possible to aid pre-season planning ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.

Bloom added: “We are delighted to have secured the services of one of the brightest young English coaches. Graham Potter has an excellent record of developing teams with an attractive playing style, fierce determination and a strong collective spirit.

“We are excited about our third successive season in the Premier League and we now wish to build on the solid foundations laid by Chris Hughton. We believe that Graham is an excellent fit for our club and we are very much look forward to working with him.”

Liverpool have made an offer for Thorgan Hazard, the younger brother of Chelsea star Eden, according to reports.

The attacking midfielder has scored 12 goals and chipped in with a further 11 assists in just 29 matches this season, and has been tipped to seal a move away from Gladbach this summer.

A return to England has been mooted after Hazard spent three years on Chelsea’s books, joining the Blues the same summer as his elder brother.

But it is Chelsea’s Premier League rivals Liverpool who are making the biggest push for Hazard, with Nieuwsblad reporting that the Reds have already made an offer for him.

Their bid is said to be worth more than £36million (€42million), as Liverpool are claimed to have offered more than Borussia Dortmund’s initial €42million bid.

Hazard is understood to favour a move to Dortmund, however, as he wishes to remain in Germany, and also considers he will get more opportunities to play at the Westfalenstadion.

Football: Birmingham hit with nine-point deduction after breaching financial rules

LONDON (AFP) - Championship side Birmingham have been docked nine points for breaching financial rules, the English Football League announced on Friday (March 22).
The Championship side broke the EFL's profitability and sustainability regulations and faced a possible 12-point deduction and a transfer ban.
The penalty drops the club from 13th in the second-tier table to 18th, leaving them only five points above the relegation zone.
An independent disciplinary commission heard the case on Monday and decided the Midlands club should not be given the maximum penalty.
It follows a review of the financial submission from Birmingham City for the three-year period 2015/16 to 2017/18 where it was determined the club had recorded losses in excess of the £39 million ($51 million) threshold.
"The profitability and sustainability rules, aligned with those in the Premier League, became effective in 2015/16," said an EFL spokesman.
"Season 2017/18 was the end of the first full reporting period with Birmingham City the only club found to have breached those requirements, when it incurred adjusted losses of £48.787 million, £9.787 million in excess of the permitted losses."

Chelsea are set to open talks with Ruben Loftus-Cheek over a new contract, according to reports.

He has two years left on his current deal, but Chelsea are keen to tie him down to avoid a Callum Hudson-Odoi saga.

The club are facing a fight to keep the 18-year-old, whose contract expires next summer. Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund are understood to be interested in the youngster.

Loftus-Cheek, 23, initially struggled for game-time under Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri, despite starring for Crystal Palace last season, which resulted in a call-up to Gareth Southgate̢۪s England squad at the 2018 World Cup.

But he has edged out Ross Barkley and Mateo Kovacic to establish himself as a key member of Chelsea̢۪s squad in their pursuit of a top-four spot.

The Sun claim Stamford Bridge chiefs want to open talks about extending his stay in west London this summer.

Team-mate Cesar Azpilicueta is adamant Loftus-Cheek will be a Chelsea star if he stays fit.

He said: â€Å“I have told him a lot of times that he needed to be fit. For a long time with Chelsea he wasn’t able to play and train for a few weeks in a row.

â€Å“He’s come from Crystal Palace after having a good loan there. He came to Chelsea after the World Cup and the manager trusted him, but due to a few back problems he couldn’t get the rhythm of being involved in the team every week.

â€Å“But since he has been doing this, we have seen an improvement, his confidence in space is very good. He is very strong.

â€Å“He is a good attacking midfielder that can attack the box and score goals. I’m sure the only way he can go is up.”

Tottenham news: Mauricio Pochettino hints he would leave club if they win ‘miracle’ Champions League this season

Mauricio Pochettino has shocked Tottenham on the eve of their massive Champions League semi-final second leg at Ajax, by hinting he could leave if they win the competition.

Spurs are 1-0 down having been beaten at home in the first match of the tie and must now overturn this deficit on foreign soil.

Should they do so, and then also win the final, Pochettino admits he could bow out of the club.

At his press conference on Tuesday, the Argentinian was asked what conquering the Champions League would mean to him and replied: â€Å“Winning the Champions League? Yes, it would be fantastic, no? Close a five-year chapter and go home.”

He was later quizzed as to whether he was joking with this remark and whether it meant he would leave Tottenham if they won the trophy.

â€Å“It’s not a joke,” Pochettino answered, â€Å“Why?

â€Å“To win the Champions League with Tottenham, in this circumstance, this season, maybe I need to think a little bit to do something different in the future, for sure.

â€Å“Because to repeat this miracle, you know…”

Donny van de Beek scored the only goal as Ajax stunned Spurs in the first leg

Regarding the upcoming match itself, Pochettino said: â€Å“To be in the semi-final with a negative result from the first leg makes it difficult, but it is still open.

â€Å“We know very well that we need to win the game to have the opportunity to be in the final, that’s the objective.

â€Å“We have to perform to our best and to have some luck because of course in football you have to have some luck. It’s an exciting game ahead.

â€Å“I think it’s an exciting moment for us to be in a semi-final. I think we need to enjoy and have more freedom to play, and to start the game the way we want to start.

â€Å“The approach was really poor from our side in the first leg. I think we need to feel more freedom to play. We have nothing to lose from the beginning. We know we need to win and try.”

Football: Solid and smart Bayern hold Liverpool at Anfield in Champions League

LIVERPOOL, England (REUTERS) - Bayern Munich showed all their Champions League experience and quality organisation as they held Liverpool to a 0-0 draw in the first leg of their last 16 match at Anfield on Tuesday (Feb 19).
The result leaves it all to play for in the second leg in Munich on March 13, although the German side will be without defender Joshua Kimmich who will be suspended after picking up a yellow card.
It is no accident that Bayern have reached the semi-finals of this competition in six of the last seven seasons and they showed their pragmatic calmness to subdue Liverpool's normally lively front three.
Mohamed Salah, the man Liverpool look to for moments of inspiration, to create a goal out of nothing, had a night to forget with one of his poorest displays in this competition.
Liverpool simply could not find the fluency and rhythm that brings the best out of their forward line although they will be pleased, in the absence of their defensive rock Virgil van Dijk, to have kept out Bayern.
There were few clear-cut chances in the game although Liverpool created several half-openings in the first period.
The first was one of the best they managed - Jordan Henderson looking for Salah, who had snuck in behind Niklas Sule, but the Egyptian's toe-poke at full stretch was straight at Manuel Neuer.
At the other end, their goalkeeper Alisson Becker had to be alert to keep out a mis-hit clearance from Joel Matip that hit him in the chest.
Kingsley Coman fired into the side-netting after a sloppy give away from Alisson but that was a rare sign of jitters from either defence.
Bayern were content to sit deep after the break and the closest Juergen Klopp's side came in the second half was a diving header from Sadio Mane in the 86th minute which Neuer pushed around the post.
This was not a night that will go in the list of great European encounters at Anfield, a fact reflected in a rather flat atmosphere for much of the game, but Liverpool know they still have a chance to progress.
"You're playing an experienced team. They've been here and done it for five or six years," said left back Andy Robertson.
"We've kept a clean sheet, could've scored a couple of goals but the tie is well and truly alive. If we score there it's crucial."

Premier League launches No Room for Racism campaign, with Raheem Sterling and Virgil van Dijk featuring in promotional video

The Premier League has launched the No Room for Racism campaign as part of its continued commitment to help tackling discrimination in football.

The campaign kicked off on Saturday at Craven Cottage for Fulham’s clash with reigning champions Manchester City, which will run from Saturday 30 March to Monday 8 April, carrying a clear message that racism is not acceptable in the top flight or indeed the wider game.

No Room for Racism and Kick It Out branding will feature across grounds for the next two rounds of fixtures.

Premier League skippers will also wear Kick It Out captain’s armbands at all matches in recognition of the contribution made by the organisation in tackling discrimination in football over the last quarter of a century.

A nationwide advertising campaign across digital and social channels accompanies the scheme, featuring some of the Premier League’s best players and managers, including Raheem Sterling and Virgil van Dijk.

Premier League interim chief executive, Richard Masters, said: “It is evident there is still a minority of people who think discriminatory behaviour is acceptable, but the No Room for Racism campaign makes it clear that it will not be accepted by the Premier League and our clubs.

“We know how passionate football fans are, but this should never lead to any form of prejudice.

“We want everybody to be positive and respectful, create a welcoming atmosphere and show that football is everyone’s game.”

The campaign was devised following a meeting between the Premier League and its member clubs where there was a consensus view that more needs to be done to promote inclusion and diversity in football.

Premier League clubs have also committed to improving career pathways and opportunities to encourage more people from different backgrounds to take up coaching, refereeing and administrative roles in the sport.

“We are also aware that much more needs to be done, and the Premier League is committed to further promoting inclusion and diversity throughout our competition and beyond.”

Manchester United transfer news: Red Devils hope as Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt ‘open to Old Trafford move’

The 19-year-old led Ajax to the Champions League semi-finals and helped the Dutch giants win a first Eredivisie title in five years, as well as the Dutch Cup.

“We’ve shown everyone what Ajax is about, what kind of city Amsterdam is,” De Ligt said.

“We have shown everyone what we stand for, and that is attacking football. We’ve shown everyone what the big man above us [Ajax legend Johan Cruyff] wanted to see and what he expected from us.

“We did it all together – experienced players, youth players, everyone. And the supporters, we want to thank you for a fantastic season.”

De Ligt’s leadership skills could help tighten up a leaky United defence which conceded 54 goals in the 2018/19 Premier League campaign.

And The Telegraph claim the Netherlands defender remains interested in a move to Old Trafford, despite the club’s failure to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Last week, De Ligt insisted there is no deal in place between Ajax and Barcelona to sign him as the LaLiga champions are also keen to buy Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid.

The France forward, who on Tuesday announced he will leave Atletico this summer, has a £104million release clause.

It is believed Barca would be unable to fund both Griezmann and De Ligt transfers in the same window.

De Ligt is expected to make up his mind over his next move after the Nations League finals next month.
