Football: Neymar hints at joining Real Madrid

SAO PAULO (AFP) - Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar on Sunday (March 3) left the door open for a potential move to Spanish giants Real Madrid.
The world's most expensive footballer is currently recovering from a foot injury which he suffered on January 23 and has been linked with a return to La Liga ever since he joined PSG from Barcelona in 2017.
"In the future, everything is possible," he told Brazilian television channel Globo.
"I'm not saying I'm going to Real Madrid, calm down. Everybody knows I have already accomplished my dream which was (playing for) Barcelona.
"Real Madrid is one of the biggest teams in the world, every player perceived to have an interest in the club wants to play for them. Right now I'm very happy in Paris." Neymar said Barcelona's Lionel Messi had sent him his regards after hearing about the Brazilian's most recent injury.
"At the time I needed support the most, from people and the team, the best in the world came to me to say 'I'm here to help you'," Neymar said.
The 27-year-old said PSG teammate Kylian Mbappe will be one of the world's greatest ever players despite the pair both eyeing the biggest individual prizes in the sport.

"He's going to become one of the best players in the history of football and I'm trying to help him as best as possible. We have the same friendship as I had with Lionel, even competing for the Ballon d'Or," he said.
Neymar will miss Wednesday's Champions League last-16 return leg against Manchester United with the metatarsal problem he suffered six weeks ago.
He was sidelined for three months of last season with the same issue, returning just in time to play at the World Cup.
PSG anticipate he will be back in time for a potential European quarter-final in April.

Antonio Conte: Former Chelsea boss set to be named Luciano Spalletti’s successor at Inter Milan

Former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is set for a return to management with Inter Milan.

Conte, who was axed by the Blues last July, will reportedly sign a three or four-year deal at the San Siro, according to the Guardian.

Several other European giants, including Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich, had expressed an interest in the 49-year-old.

However, it is believed Conte had his heart set on returning to Serie A and is relishing the challenge of turning Inter into title contenders again.

Another key factor in his imminent arrival at the San Siro is his relationship with the club’s CEO Beppe Marotta.

The pair worked with each other at Juventus between 2011 and 2014, with the Turin giants winning three consecutive league titles during that time.

Inter are currently fourth in Serie A with one game of the season to go and are expected to clinch the final Champions League place.

They are one point ahead of arch rivals Milan in fifth after losing 4-1 to Napoli on Sunday, and face Empoli at home on Sunday while their city rivals play SPAL away.

Declan Rice: West Ham and England youngster apologises for ‘Up the RA’ posts on social media

Declan Rice has issued an apology for remarks made on social media which appeared to show support for the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA).

The West Ham star, who has controversially switched his international allegiance from the Republic to Ireland to England, used the phrase ‘Up the RA’ at least three times in posts on Instagram and Twitter in 2015.

The phrase is widely used to demonstrate support and show encouragement for the IRA.

In one message – in response to an Ireland Under-17 teammate – he remarked: â€Å“UP THE RA – Wait til we draw England.”

After the old posts resurfaced, Rice wrote on Instagram on Thursday: “I am aware that a poorly-expressed comment I made when I was a junior player has been circulated on social media.

“I recognise now that my attempt to show support for my team-mates at the time could be negatively interpreted.

“While my naive words were not meant to be a political opinion and do not represent who I am, I sincerely apologise for any offence caused.”

A Football Association spokesperson said: “We are aware of the matter and will be writing to him to remind him of his responsibilities.”

Rice, 20, is currently training with the England squad ahead of Friday’s Euro 2020 qualifier against the Czech Republic at Wembley.

He was called up to the squad for the first time by Gareth Southgate after declaring his intention to play for the Three Lions last month, despite having already represented the Republic of Ireland.

The London-born midfielder, who has grandparents from Cork, has won three caps for the Republic of Ireland but as all were friendly matches he remained eligible to play for the country of his birth.

Speaking earlier this week, Rice said: â€Å“It was a really tough decision.

â€Å“I think everyone knows my situation with the Republic of Ireland. I’ve played there in the youth setup, but I had to make a decision that was best for me.

â€Å“As you can hear, I am English, I am from England and it was really good playing for Ireland. Now I’m just really looking forward to the future and pulling on the England shirt.

“I’ve just got to look forward and forget about the past.”

Meanwhile, Southgate has defended Rice, insisting the comments are not in line with Rice’s current beliefs.

â€Å“He’s apologised. It’s not representative of what he believes and feels and his views,” Southgate told the media.

“Outside of that, the obvious point is when he was 15, 16 when engaged in a conversation with friends.”

Netherlands 3-1 England (AET): Three Lions capitulate in extra-time to go crashing out of Nations League

England went crashing out of the Nations League after a total collapse in extra-time of their semi-final against the Netherlands.

With the scores level at full-time, calamitous mistakes from John Stones and Ross Barkley gifted the Dutch a 3-1 victory, with Kyle Walker inadvertently turning into his own net before Quincy Promes profited.

Marcus Rashford had put England in front from the penalty spot following a clumsy challenge from Matthjis de Ligt, before the highly-rated Dutchman atoned for his error with a bullet header in the second-half.

The Three Lions thought they had won it when Jesse Lingard slotted home in the latter stages of normal time, but replays showed he was a whisker offside and the goal was chalked off by VAR.

Andy Goldstein isn’t happy with Gareth Southgate after England’s loss

The defeat will feel all too familiar for England fans, who will remember their side taking the lead against Croatia before losing the 2018 World Cup semi-final after extra-time.

Gareth Southagte’s men will now face Switzerland in a battle for third place on Sunday, while the Netherlands and Portugal compete to become the first ever Nations League champions.

There were some boos from stunned England fans at the end of a gripping clash at the sold-out Estadio D. Afonso Henriques.

The semi-final started sloppily but Holland would eventually settle and threaten to hurt an England backline that was shaking from the outset.

Things appeared to be going one way, only for the normally unruffled teenager De Ligt to miscontrol a backpass and catch Rashford with his hasty recovery challenge. The forward coolly turned home the 32nd-minute penalty.

A last-ditch Denzel Dumfries challenge prevented Rashford grabbing another soon after – a tackle that would bring a premature end to his night, with Harry Kane coming on at the break having been rested along with the other Champions League finalists.

Jadon Sancho wasted a glorious chance to double England’s advantage with a close-range header, while Jordan Pickford saved Walker’s blushes after being robbed of possession by Depay.

Ronald Koeman’s side were unnerving the Three Lions, so there was little surprise when the pressure told in the 73rd minute when De Ligt lost Stones and rose above Walker to head powerfully past motionless Pickford.

Donny Van De Beek fired over as Holland pushed for a winner that looked to have come at the other end seven minutes from time.

Raheem Sterling, who led the side out as captain, flicked Ben Chilwell’s pass into the path of Barkley, whose fine ball put Lingard behind to find the net with a cool finish.

The England hordes erupted as the players wheeled off in celebration, only for the dreaded VAR check sign to be display on the big screen.

After an uncomfortable pause, the goal was ruled out as Lingard was deemed offside by a toe.

Soon Holland were looking for VAR to gift them a winner, with the players surrounding referee Turpin claiming Chilwell had handled a Dumfries strike.

Another anxious wait followed, with VAR adjudging there had not been an infringement.

Kane struck across the face of goal on the turn, with Lingard curling wide and Sterling clipping the bar either side of Depay missing the target after dreadful play by Harry Maguire.

Kane cleared a Virgil Van Dijk attempt off the line in the first half of extra-time, which saw Stones bizarrely dilly-dally on the ball.

Depay took the ball and forced a save out of Pickford and Walker could only put into his own net when trying to prevent Promes.

England looked punch drunk and Barkley gifted Holland a third as his ball found Depay, whose cross was turned home by Promes in the 114th minute for an inglorious end to a challenging few days.
