A photo said to be of Emiliano Sala’s body has been posted online, prompting a police inquiry.
On 21 January, a light aircraft carrying the 28-year-old to Cardiff disappeared over the English Channel and his body was found along with the wreckage two weeks later.
A Dorset Police spokesman said: “We are aware that a picture reported to be of Mr Sala’s body has been shared on social media channels and are disgusted that somebody did this.”
He added: “It is clearly a very difficult time for Mr Sala’s family and they should not have to endure additional pain that this shameful act will undoubtedly cause.
“We are investigating this incident and are working together with a number of agencies to establish how the picture was taken and who is responsible.”

David Ibbotson, a 60-year-old father of three, was piloting the aircraft which went down over the Channel. He remains missing, despite a private search taking place after a crowdfunding campaign raised almost £250,000.
Sala had joined Cardiff City from Nantes in a £15m transfer.
“Cardiff City FC expresses its disgust and outrage at the individual/individuals who thoughtlessly took and shared the image,” a spokesperson for the Premier League club said.
On Friday Sala’s father, Horacio, died at the age of 58 after suffering a heart attack, three months after his son’s death.
The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) are still looking into why the plane crashed.
Cardiff and Nantes are currently locked in a dispute over the £15million transfer fee for Sala, after the Premier League side refused to make the first scheduled payment for the striker.
The Bluebirds argue the agreement struck with Nantes for the purchase of Sala was not legal as the French club failed to fulfil conditions they set.
Nantes insist they fully complied with FIFA regulations.
Last week, Cardiff made a pledge to protect their players and staff by insisting agents ‘book only commercial licensed air carriers when handling player transfers’.
“The club has a robust flight policy, but we are putting in place additional processes to protect players and staff,†a Cardiff spokesperson said.
