Griezmann calls time on Atletico stay as move to Barcelona looms

MADRID • French striker Antoine Griezmann has told Atletico Madrid he will leave them in the close season, the Spanish club said on Twitter on Tuesday.
The 28-year-old has a contract until 2023 with Atletico, but has a buy-out clause of €120 million (S$183.9 million) and has been the target of several approaches from LaLiga rivals Barcelona.
"Antoine Griezmann has told the club he will not continue as a Rojiblanco (red and white, the club's colours) next season," the club said.
Within a few moments, the 2018 World Cup winner then posted a video explaining himself.
"After speaking with Cholo (club coach Diego Simeone), then with (chief executive) Miguel Angel and the people in the hierarchy I wanted to speak with you, the fans, who have always given me a lot of love," said Griezmann.
"I wanted to tell you I have taken the decision to leave. I have had five wonderful seasons here and you will always be in my heart.
"The truth is, it has been difficult to take this route but it is what I feel I need and I would like to thank all of you for the love you have shown me during these five years."

HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS
It's difficult to say no to teams like Barca. (But) when you're shown love at home, you don't go elsewhere. They did everything possible to make me feel good, including bringing in important players and building a great team.
ANTOINE GRIEZMANN, in a TV documentary named The Decision last year, explaining why he stayed at Atletico.

TIME TO LEAVE HOME
I have had five wonderful seasons here and you (the fans) will always be in my heart. The truth is, it has been difficult to take this route but it is what I feel I need and I would like to thank all of you for the love you have shown me during these five years.
GRIEZMANN, telling fans why he has decided to leave.

With 133 goals in 252 games at Atletico, he has rarely been unfit or injured. The Frenchman was a Champions League runner-up in 2016, losing to rivals Real Madrid. Last year, he scored two goals to help Atletico beat Marseille in the Europa League final.
He finished third in the voting for the Ballon d'Or in 2016, after France lost to Portugal in the European Championship final and was a huge presence as Les Bleus romped to a memorable World Cup win at Russia 2018 after which he also finished third in the Ballon d'Or votes.
He rejected an offer from Barca last June, documenting his internal struggles about whether to make the move in a documentary called The Decision, produced by Barcelona defender Gerard Pique's Kosmos production company.
The last contract he signed initially raised his release clause to €200 million but that figure will drop to €120 million on July 1.
Griezmann's departure may signal an exodus at Atletico. France defender Lucas Hernandez agreed to join Bayern Munich when they paid his €80 million release clause and long-serving captain Diego Godin's contract is coming to an end.

Goalkeeper lets disabled rival fan score penalty against him after match

This is what football is all about.

Penarol goalkeeper Kevin Dawson had just won a league match in Uruguay over his former club Plaza Colonia, but instead of celebrating with his team-mates he found the time to let a disabled fan take a penalty against him.

The pair made their way over to the penalty spot

Dawson and Luca, who has downs syndrome, then made their way to the penalty spot in front of the packed crowd.

The young fan then slotted his penalty into the left corner and wheeled away in celebration.

Have a look at a clip of the penalty below…

It was a heartwarming moment that the fan will remember for the rest of his life.

And it’s not the first time that Dawson, 27, has been involved in a incident with a match-goer.

Just under a year ago the stopper brought the wrong coloured goalkeeper top to a match and was involved in a hilarious shirt swap with a supporter.

After realising his error, he spotted a fan in the crowd wearing an exact replica of the shirt he was meant to wear and subsequently asked to use it for the match.

He then went onto keep a clean sheet as his side won 1-0.

Chelsea 2-2 Burnley: David Luiz accuses Clarets of playing ‘anti-football’ after they deny Blues

David Luiz has accused Burnley of playing ‘anti-football’ after the Clarets held Chelsea to a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge on Monday night.

The Blues missed a golden opportunity to move up to third after a frustrating night at Stamford Bridge, which saw four goals inside the opening 24 minutes.

Luiz was furious with Burnley’s tactics

Luiz was furious with Burnley’s tactics

Two quickfire goals from N’Golo Kante and Gonzalo Higuain quickly cancelled out Jeff Hendrick’s stunning opener, before Ashley Barnes ghosted in to draw Burnley level.

The hosts bossed possession for the remainder of the game, but they failed to seriously test Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton, who was booked for time wasting in the first-half.

And Luiz was not impressed with the visitors’ approach.

He told Sky Sports: “We tried everything to win the game, but it’s difficult playing a team who has two chances, score two goals, but didn’t want to play the game.

“For me, the authority on the pitch is the referee, and when he is not there to try to check what he has to do on the pitch, it’s difficult.

“They were trying to time waste from the first minute of the first half, and then it was anti-football so it’s difficult to play against.”

Ugly scenes broke out on the touchline towards the end as Maurizio Sarri was sent to the stands – and his assistant Gianfranco Zola also took issue with Burnley’s approach.

He said: “I think in the second half we didn’t play much football.

“There was a lot of time-wasting and we felt five minutes wasn’t enough to compensate for all the lost time and lost rhythm.

“We are not very happy. I understand Burnley’s approach, but we’re very unhappy. Five minutes wasn’t enough [stoppage time].”

The point all but secures Burnley’s safety in the Premier League, with the Clarets nine points clear of Cardiff with a superior goal difference.

Tottenham Hotspur news: Mauricio Pochettino has ‘no plans’ to replace Hugo Lloris after latest howler against Liverpool

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has ‘no plans’ to replace Hugo Lloris in the summer, according to reports.

The France goalkeeper has come under intense scrutiny for a number of a high-profile errors this season, with his latest coming on Sunday when he handed Liverpool a late victory by fumbling the ball onto his goal-line.

But according to the Mail, Spurs have ‘no plans’ to replace Lloris and will instead prioritise the recruitment of at least two central midfielders, a new left-back and a support striker for Harry Kane.

Spurs are looking to offload Victor Wanyama, who has featured in just six Premier League matches this season, while they also want to add a creative midfielder to replace Christian Eriksen, with a summer departure for the Dane looking increasingly likely.

Eriksen, whose deal is up at the end of next season, has been stalling on signing a new contract and Real Madrid have been strongly linked with the playmaker.

However, a hunt for a new goalkeeper is not being considered – and Pochettino has reiterated the faith he has in his stopper.

“He is my captain,” Pochettino told the media. “He’s one of the best keepers in the world. There’s no doubt. There’s no doubt that Hugo is one of the best and he’s going to be in the goal.

“It’s a situation that is so painful because I think we deserved more (at Liverpool), but in that kind of situation, which happens in football, it’s only to be strong and back our player.

“I think Hugo is going to be, like always, great for us. He was great for us. He was so important in all that process in five years, and for sure he’s going to be one of the most important players for the future of the club too.”

Football: Iwobi, Lacazette lead Arsenal to win at Huddersfield

HUDDERSFIELD, England (REUTERS) - Arsenal returned to winning ways with a 2-1 victory over bottom side Huddersfield Town on Saturday (Feb 9), but remain the only side without an away clean sheet in the Premier League this season.
Arsenal had suffered four defeats in their last nine league games, including a 3-1 loss at Manchester City last week, but Alex Iwobi put them ahead in the 16th minute with a deflected shot.
Huddersfield pressed and harried but rarely troubled the Arsenal goal in the first half, with the difference in quality showing as the visitors doubled their advantage through Alexandre Lacazette's 10th league goal of the season a minute before halftime.
Adama Diakhaby had two good chances to get Huddersfield - who had drawn once and lost 11 of their previous 12 league games - back into the match, but failed to really test Bernd Leno in the Arsenal goal.
Sead Kolasinac put through his own net in stoppage time to give Huddersfield late hope, scoring Huddersfield's first goal in over nine hours of football in all competitions, but the visitors held on for the win.
Victory moved Arsenal level on points with fifth-placed Chelsea, who play Manchester City on Sunday, while Huddersfield stayed bottom, 13 points from safety.
"Yes but we won," Arsenal manager Unai Emery said when asked if he was disappointed at the lack of a clean sheet.
"The clean sheet is important but our goal is to win. This was a very important victory to be closer to top four. Our target is this."
Arsenal started the match without Mesut Ozil and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the matchday squad, both missing through illness according to the club.
However, the visitors soon went in front through Iwobi, who collected Kolasinac's cross and shot at goal, with a deflection off Terence Kongolo taking the ball past home goalkeeper Ben Hamer.
Arsenal did not exert control after the opener as Huddersfield flew into challenges to unsettle the visitors, but one minute before the interval, Lacazette tapped in at the far post after being picked out by Ainsley Maitland-Niles to double the visitors' lead.
Arsenal led an away Premier League game by two goals or more for the first time since August, 2016, but their advantage was almost halved early in the second half, only for Diakhaby to fire too close to Leno before failing to find the target when unmarked at the back post.
With Arsenal seemingly on course for that first shutout, Daikhaby broke behind a static backline and nudged the ball towards goal for Kolasinac to deflect it over the line.
"We gave everything today and the way we played today made me proud," Huddersfield manager Jan Siewert said.
"At least at the end we scored. I fight until the end for this club."

Harry Kane insists he is ready to take on Liverpool in the Champions League final

Manager Mauricio Pochettino has been coy on whether Kane was forecast to play in the game, telling talkSPORT last week that he may start on the bench.

But, having returned to full training with his team-mates, Kane has declared his availability for the Champions League clash and says it’s up to his boss to decide if he starts.

“I feel good,” said the striker.

“I started to feel my way back with the team at the end of last week and there have been no problems so far.

“For me this week now is to get the fitness as high as possible.

“Then it’s down to the manager. Like I said, I feel good. The manager will assess it and decide whether I’m ready to go or not. But so far, I feel good and ready.

“I did a lot of work on my own to get me into a good place to go back with the team.

“Since I’ve been with them, I’ve been full training, doing everything.

“I’m at a place now where I’m ready to go for any game but again, it’s down to the manager.”

While many have cursed the three-week gap between the final Premier League game of the season and the Champions League final, it has been a blessing for Spurs as it has given Kane, Harry Winks, Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez time to get fit.

“Having the three-week gap after the end of the season definitely helped,” Kane added.

“From when it happened, I could put a plan in place to be ready for this game.

“We took our time with it. We’ve had longer than we had for the other ankle injuries. It’s worked out well. So I slowly took my time and now I’m in a good place.”

There were fears over Kane’s long-term fitness when he hobbled off against Man City in April, but he is ready for the final

Kane has been on the sidelines as Spurs navigated the quarter-finals and semi-finals in the most dramatic of circumstances.

He watched the memorable quarter-final second leg against City at home, and promptly posted his celebration on social media, and was in Amsterdam for the famous comeback against Ajax, where he ran on to the pitch at the end of the match.

Kane admits he is not the best spectator.

“It’s so hard watching as a fan because you’ve got no control,” he said. “The first, the Man City game, I was watching at home with one of my friends and my dad and the emotions of that game were just crazy.

“We were so up and down. When Raheem (Sterling) scored, one of my mates just left the room. Then all of a sudden we were crawling back. It was just crazy.

“Of course for the Ajax game I was there in the stands surrounded by Ajax fans. I was in the directors’ bit. The first half was good for them….

“Slowly it started to change and right at the end I said to Davinson (Sanchez), let’s go down and be with the team as it looked like the whistle was going to go.

“All of a sudden we scored and we jumped down, sprinted down the tunnel to be there when the game was over. Amazing experience

“It was just amazing to be there watching from the outside as normally you are involved and watching things as it happens. To be watching from the outside was amazing.”
