Juventus’ new kit: Serie A side believed to have switched from black and white stripes because it ‘reminds Americans of referees’

Juventus’ kit for next season has received mixed reviews, but it is thought the drastic change is down to marketing reasons.

The Italian champions have ditched the famous black and white stripes and replaced them with a monochrome look.

Naturally, when rumours of the new direction first surfaced, a number of fans were distraught – how dare adidas mess with tradition and history, they cried.

However, Football Italia have suggested the design has been chosen to appeal to fans across the Atlantic.

The rumour claims research suggests black and white stripes remind American fans of referees given this is what officials in baseball and American Football wear.

It would seem the club is hoping the shirt will prove popular with supporters across the Atlantic with Cristiano Ronaldo the face of the brand.

Juve claimed their eighth consecutive Serie A title this season but are still chasing a third Champions League title that has so far eluded them.

They were beaten in the quarter-finals by Ajax and have not won the competition since 1996.
