If you said Georginio Wijnaldum and Moussa Sissoko would meet in a Champions League final back in 2016, you might’ve got some strange looks.
The pair were relegated together with Newcastle, but three years on, they’re going head to head for the most coveted prize in club football.
Wijnaldum tells talkSPORT that the two midfielders became thick as thieves during their time on Tyneside, before they went their separate ways.

Wijnaldum joined Liverpool and Sissoko moved to Spurs – and they have both played significant roles in their clubs’ journey to Madrid.
But two best friends will become fierce enemies for one night only when Liverpool and Tottenham battle it out on the biggest stage of all.
“He [Sissoko] is a really great friend,” Wijnaldum told Ian Abrahams.

“Since then, we’ve had a really good relationship.
“Whenever my family cooked I always asked him to come to my house and we sat there until late in the evening.

Wijnaldum will be hoping to right the wrongs of last year’s Champions League final when Liverpool were beaten 3-1 by Real Madrid in Kiev.
And the Dutchman admits that while he never dreamed of such nights when he was a kid, he’s beginning to get a taste for the big occasion.

“I didn’t have dreams of playing in finals because my interest was more in gymnastics,” the 28-year-old added.
