Tottenham news: Graeme Souness gives brutal verdict on Spurs defender Kieran Trippier after performance against Liverpool

Graeme Souness issued a damning assessment of Kieran Trippier’s defensive capabilities after another shaky performance during Tottenham’s 2-1 defeat to Liverpool.

The Sky Sports pundit is never afraid to speak his mind and Trippier has become his latest victim.

The England defender has fallen from grace since his World Cup heroics last summer – and he has been held responsible in some quarters for Liverpool’s opening goal on Sunday.

Reds left-back Andy Robertson was given plenty of time to deliver a sensational cross for Roberto Firmino.

Asked why Robertson was afforded so much space by Trippier, Souness told Sky Sports: “Because he is not a good enough defender.”

The Liverpool left was a source of constant danger throughout the first-half, but Spurs emerged as a more dominant force after the break and equalised through Lucas Moura.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men looked more likely to snatch a winner, with Moussa Sissoko spurning a glorious one-on-one opportunity, however it was Liverpool who took all three points through Toby Alderweireld’s unfortunate 90th-minute own-goal.

It meant a fourth consecutive away defeat in the Premier League for Spurs, who now find themselves scrambling for a top-four finish.

And Trippier isn’t the only player to face questions over his ability.

talkSPORT pundit Tony Cascarino has urged Tottenham to find a new goalkeeper after Hugo Lloris fumbled Mohamed Salah’s header, sparking the own-goal.

â€Å“I will be surprised long term – and I am talking into next season – if Pochettino doesn’t buy another goalkeeper,” he told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.

â€Å“He has already got a good one in there already but you need better. You need a keeper of the highest level to make your team go on to another level of not being second or third.

â€Å“I don’t think he is as good as what you need between the sticks to go and win things.”
