Chris Powell: Southend United sack manager with academy chief Ricky Duncan installed as interim boss

Chris Powell has been sacked as manager of Southend United, the League One club have confirmed.

Powell, the former England international, has been in charge at Roots Hall since January 2018, but is dismissed after a run of 11 games without a win.

Southend’s poor form leaves them outside the relegation places only due to their goal difference.

“It is with much regret that the club has this morning terminated Chris Powell’s contract,” a Southend statement read.

“The results over a number of weeks, eleven games without a win, has impacted all concerned and immediate changes needed to be made. The club’s interests are paramount, but the board are nevertheless disappointed to see Chris Powell leave.”

Ricky Duncan, the club’s academy chief, has been installed as interim manager following Powell’s dismissal.

Powell, who spent six years playing for Southend, took up the managerial reins last year as Phil Brown’s successor.

However, they failed to win any of their following 11 matches – falling to seven defeats in that run – to drop down level on points with Walsall in the final relegation place.

The Shrimpers’ -10 goal difference is far better than the majority of their relegation rivals, however, with all four teams below Southend recording a differential of -19 or larger.

Southend have seven matches remaining before the end of the season, including trips to bottom four sides Walsall and Rochdale.

Duncan will begin his reign as interim manager this Saturday with the visit of Shrewsbury – who are one point and one place above Southend in the League One table – to Roots Hall.

Former Leeds United boss Steve Evans has refused to rule out taking over at Southend United in the wake of Chris Powell's departure. Evans, recently sacked by League One side Peterborough, has suggested there are a number of clubs hoping to speak to him about taking over as he ponders his next move in the […] Read More FOOTBALLLEAGUEWORLD.CO.UK
