Liverpool transfer news: Matthijs de Ligt no longer a summer target for Reds as Barcelona lead the race

Liverpool have opted against pursuing a move for Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt, according to reports.

De Ligt is one of Europe’s most coveted players, having starred for the Dutch giants in their run to the Champions League semi-final.

Barcelona have been long time admirers of the £60m-rated defender, and appeared to be in a straight tussle for the 19-year-old with Jurgen Klopp’s men.

However, the Mail claim the Reds, like Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain, have ended their interest in De Ligt.

While City and PSG cited costs as their reason for retracting their interest in the Ajax man, Liverpool have reportedly decided to prioritise their transfer business elsewhere.

They will turn their focus towards a new forward who can play across the front three, as well as finding cover at left-back and in goal – should Simon Mignolet move on.

Barcelona have already signed De Ligt’s team-mate, Frenkie De Jong, with reports in Spain suggesting the LaLiga leaders will return for a second swoop.

Ajax have already made moves to replace De Ligt with Lisandro Martinez, who is close to joining from Defensa y Justicia in Argentina for £5.8million.

The 21-year-old defender, who can play on the left or in the centre, arrived in Amsterdam for his medical on Monday morning ahead of putting pen-to-paper on a four-year deal.
