The source of the fire remains unclear. Fortunately, the building had been undergoing restoration work which meant some precious artefacts and statues were already out of harm’s way.

And billionaire Pinault, who owns French luxury group Kering – which includes Saint-Laurent and Gucci, has promised to make the donation to rebuild the famous landmark.

“My father [François Pinault] and I have decided to release as of now from the funds of Artemis a sum of 100 million euros to participate in the effort that will be necessary for the complete reconstruction of Notre Dame,” Pinault wrote in a statement posted on Twitter.

Meanwhile, Nathalie Boy De La Tour, the president of France’s Professional Football League, has promised financial assistance from her organisation following the fire that partly destroyed Notre Dame Cathedral on Monday.

Just under 400 firefighters tackled the blaze through the night, battling to stop it wreaking complete destruction of the 850-year-old Gothic building after flames torched the roof, sending its spire crashing to the ground.

Leaders from around the world have expressed support, pledging to help France rebuild the famous structure, with Boy De La Tour also vowing the LFP will do what it can.

“The world of (French) football will mobilise to help financially rebuild this cathedral which is part of our heritage,” said Boy De La Tour, as reported by L’Equipe.

“This is a help that we will coordinate with all players in football. We will be in solidarity in this drama that affects us all. It touched us a lot.”
