Rennes owner François-Henri Pinault has pledged to donate €100million to help rebuild the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris.
The iconic Gothic church was devastated by a huge blaze on Monday night, which destroyed the 850-year-old building’s spire and roof.
The source of the fire remains unclear. Fortunately, the building had been undergoing restoration work which meant some precious artefacts and statues were already out of harm’s way.
And billionaire Pinault, who owns French luxury group Kering – which includes Saint-Laurent and Gucci, has promised to make the donation to rebuild the famous landmark.
“My father [François Pinault] and I have decided to release as of now from the funds of Artemis a sum of 100 million euros to participate in the effort that will be necessary for the complete reconstruction of Notre Dame,” Pinault wrote in a statement posted on Twitter.
