Gary McAllister attacked: Former Leeds United and Liverpool star’s assailant ‘thought to be American and may have been wearing knuckle duster’

Rangers assistant manager and former Leeds United and Liverpool star Gary McAllister required stitches after being attacked on Saturday night by a man who ‘may have been wearing a knuckle duster’.

McAllister, 53, was waiting for a taxi in Leeds city centre with his wife, Hayley, when he was punched in the face in an unprovoked attack.

McAllister was later taken to hospital by police, who are currently investigating the assault.

Detective Inspector James Entwistle, of Leeds District CID, said: “We are investigating an assault that occurred in Call Lane, in Leeds city centre, at about 4am yesterday.

“The initial report was that a man, aged in his 50s, was stood outside a bar when a man approached him and punched him in the face, causing injuries that required hospital treatment.

“We are currently arranging to speak to the victim to take fuller details of the incident and will be progressing the investigation to identify the person responsible.”

The former midfielder, who currently works as Steven Gerrard’s No2, required 10 stitches, and is reported to be ‘shaken up’ by the attack.

It is now understood the assailant may have been wearing a ‘knuckle duster’ when he attacked McAllister.

Dom Matteo, who, like McAllister, played for both Leeds and Liverpool, issued a plea for information about the assault on his Facebook page.

He revealed McAllister lost three teeth, required 12 stitches and had plastic surgery on his lip as a result of the attack.

Further, Matteo claimed the assailant is thought to be American, and may have been used some form of fist-based weapon – such as a knuckle duster – during the attack.

In a post on the social media site, Matteo wrote: “Can any Leeds/Yorkshire based lads help please?

“In the early hours of Saturday morning Leeds legend Gary McAllister was attacked in Leeds by an unknown assailant.

“The attack was totally unprovoked and very viscous, Gary was hospitalised, lost 3 teeth in the attack and had plastic surgery on his lip needing 12 stitches.

“The attacker is thought to be American, and due to the severity of the injuries may have been wearing a ‘knuckle duster’ or similar.
