Sir Alex Ferguson: Manchester United icon raises over £400,000 for the NHS as thank you for life-saving operation

Sir Alex Ferguson has raised an incredible £405,000 for the NHS as a thank you for the brain operation which saved his life.

The former Manchester United boss, 77, threw a star-studded charity bash in Manchester last Friday.

Hundreds of people paid to have dinner alongside Fergie and Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp at the lavish do, which was hosted by actor James Nesbitt.

A source told the Sun: “Alex was in great form all night and had guests in stitches with his stories.

“It raised a lot of money but Alex was determined that all of it should go to the NHS.

“He’s always been a great supporter of them and that’s become even more the case since his health issues.”

The cash included £5,000 from a punter who paid for a picture with The Proclaimers, who performed on the night.

Last May, the United legend was rushed to hospital for emergency surgery after suffering a seizure at his home in Cheshire.

He spent four days in intensive care after being placed in an induced coma.

Sir Alex praised the staff who treated him in his first public message after suffering his seizure.

“Just a quick message first of all to thank the medical staff at Macclesfield, Salford Royal and Alexandra hospitals,” he said last July.

“Believe me, without those people, who gave me such great care, I would not be sitting here today. So, thank you from me and my family. Thank you very much. It has made me feel so humble.”

He has since returned to his usual seat at Old Trafford to watch his former side in action, and is even understood to have helped Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in his position as United’s caretaker manager.

The Scot won 38 trophies in a glittering 26-year spell at Old Trafford before retiring back in 2013.
