Manchester United manager latest: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ‘set to be appointed permanent boss this week’

Manchester United could appoint Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as their permanent manager this week, according to reports.


The Norwegian has led United to within two points of fourth placed Arsenal in the Premier League, as well as the Champions League quarter-finals.

And he is the red-hot favourite to land the job on a full-time basis after winning 14 of his 19 games as caretaker since replacing the sacked Jose Mourinho in December.


The Daily Mail report United are close to giving Solskjaer a permanent contract, moving their original plans to announce a decision at the end of the season forward.

The 46-year-old has been backed to stay in the Old Trafford hot seat by club legends Gary Neville and Rio Ferdinand.


Solskjaer and his No.2 Mike Phelan have been working alongside first-team coaches Kieran McKenna and Michael Carrick.


There has also been praise of Solskjaer’s work from within the United dressing room, with midfielder Nemanja Matic saying: “I think he’s a great manager. I will be happy if he stays and I hope he will.















“But you have to say also that with Mike, Michael and Kieran, they work very well together. It’s not only Ole.”


United face a season-defining month in April when they take on Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-finals, while also facing Premier League clashes against Manchester City and Chelsea.


Solskjaer’s men will be looking to bounce back from two successive defeats to Arsenal and Wolves when they entertain Watford on Saturday.

The man brought in to replace McKay was former Man Utd 'super sub' Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who had enjoyed a decent spell as a manager in Norway but was totally untested in a top European league. He seemed overawed by the challenge ahead of him and despite a few decent results he saw his side drop out of the league after just one season.
