Former Chelsea stars Cesc Fabregas and Eidur Gudjohnsen criticise Maurizio Sarri for snubbing Gary Cahill in Europa League final

Cesc Fabregas and Eidur Gudjohnsen have criticised Maurizio Sarri for snubbing Chelsea captain Gary Cahill in the Europa League win over Arsenal.

Chelsea turned on the style to thrash Arsenal 4-1 in Baku, as an impressive second-half display swept aside their London rivals thanks to goals from Olivier Giroud, Pedro and a brace from the departing Eden Hazard.

Cahill, 33, remained on the bench throughout, with Sarri opting to bring on Davide Zappacosta, as his final substitute, for Hazard in the 89th minute.

The defender will leave the club after they opted not to renew his contract and former midfielder Fabregas feels he should have been afforded the chance to bow out one last time.

Instead it was left to captain Cesar Azpilicueta to show his class, as he invited Cahill up on to the podium to lift the trophy.

“A fantastic servant for the club. I mean, if there is one thing that I am missing tonight, it was this touch from somebody,” Fabregas told BT Sport.

“Especially it should come – and I know it’s his [Sarri’s] night, I don’t want to say anything negative tonight – but a little touch to Gary Cahill, five minutes to go, 4-1 against Arsenal, put him on, give him the armband.

“Let him leave as a proper hero as he deserves. I missed that to be honest. But anyway, a great night for Chelsea Football Club.”

Another former Chelsea star, Eidur Gudjohnsen, echoed the thoughts of Fabregas, calling Cahill a ‘fantastic servant.’

“That is absolutely spot on. I am not sure it even crossed Sarri’s mind, because maybe as a coach he was so focused on everything that goes on.”

Fabregas added: “But that’s why you have people around you as well that help you.”

To which Gudjohnsen responded: “Yeah, people that say, ‘Listen, five minutes to go, 4-1 up, show the respect that he deserve’. He’s been a fantastic servant to Chelsea.”

Maurizio Sarri is under intense scrutiny as Chelsea boss.

After a bright start at Stamford Bride, the Italian is facing the chop after drifting further and further away from automatic Champions League qualification.

Sarri is teetering on the edge at Chelsea

A draw at home to Wolves was followed by a lacklustre defeat at Everton to leave the Blues in sixth place and three points off Arsenal in fourth.

While Sarri’s style of football was initially lauded by those in west London, teams quickly became savvy to the importance of Jorginho in midfield.

As the former Napoli star became more and more constricted by opposition enforcers, the speculation surrounding around the man who brought him to Stamford Bridge also intensified.

Sarri arrived with a reputation for playing with a unique style of football meant to confound Premier League teams, but the former banker has struggled to implement it.

As a result, the 60-year-old is in danger of losing his job – with Nuno Espirito Santo and Chelsea legend Frank Lampard in the frame to replace him.

Although reports have placed those two names at the top of the list, the sackrace.com are not so certain.

And it’s safe to say the official Barca social media team are revelling in their victory.

They have just aimed a not-so-subtle dig at the Red Devils and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer by posting a picture of their talisman with the caption: “Messi at the wheel”.

The tweet is aimed at United supporters and their new chant for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – which is a version of Waterfall by the Stone Roses and begins with ‘Ole’s at the wheel.’

The phrase has somewhat become a slogan in and around Old Trafford since the Norwegian’s appointment, and it was prominent particularly after Man United’s victory over PSG in the last round.

Arsenal begun the trend after they beat United 2-0 in the Premier League last month, subbing in the name of Emirates boss Unai Emery.

And now the Catalan giants are having the last laugh with their remake of the chant featuring their very own Argentine superstar.

Jonas Lossl conceded 54 Premier League goals in the 2018/19 campaign

The 30-year-old played 31 times and kept just five clean sheets as the Terriers finished bottom in the Premier League.

Despite current No.2 Maarten Stekelenburg having one more year to go on his deal, the Daily Mail say Lossl is one of Everton’s transfer targets this summer.

The Dane was left out of Huddersfield’s matchday squad for their 1-1 final-day draw with Southampton as Joel Coleman made his Premier League debut.

Lossl tweeted: “Fantastic performance today @joelcoleman33 what a way to do your debut – congrats ! Leaving my last game for Town with a good feeling; 1 point, a great team effort and an incredible memory of our fans – what an atmosphere you created today.”

Lossl played every minute of Huddersfield’s 2017/18 season as the Terriers preserved their Premier League status.

But they could not defy the odds for a second successive campaign after winning just three league games.

Huddersfield reportedly want Sheffield Wednesday stopper Keiren Westwood as a replacement for Lossl, but the Republic of Ireland international is likely to stay at Hillsborough.

Football: Fifa says it's in regular contact with AFC over detained Bahraini player

DUBAI (REUTERS) - Fifa says it has been in regular contact with the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) over the Bahraini footballer arrested in Thailand in November over a prison sentence in his homeland.
The Australian soccer players' union this week called on the AFC to intervene to help secure the release of Hakeem Al Araibi, who plays in Australia but was arrested in November in Bangkok on an Interpol notice issued at Bahrain's request.
Araibi, who played for Bahrain's national football team and was a critic of the government, had been convicted of vandalising a police station and sentenced to 10 years in prison in absentia.
He denies wrongdoing. The Bahrain government says Araibi can appeal against the sentence if he returns to the kingdom. He was granted asylum in Australia in 2017 after fleeing Bahrain three years earlier.
Araibi was a vocal critic of AFC president Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim al-Khalifa, a member of Bahrain's ruling family and cousin of the king, when he contested the global football governing body's presidential election in 2015.
Fifa has "been working behind the scenes and have been in regular contact with our national associations and with the AFC about this case", a spokesman said late on Tuesday (Jan 15).
Last week, it said Araibi should be freed and allowed to return to Australia to continue his career.

The AFC has said it was working with groups including Fifa, but declined to comment further.

Manchester United transfer news: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer urged to forget signing ‘world class’ stars and go after the best young players

Manchester United have been told to ditch their recent trend of signing big-name and big-money stars and instead aim to bring the world’s best young players to Old Trafford.

Neil Warnock has hailed the club’s interest in 21-year-old Swansea winger Daniel James, and believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should look to make similar signings this summer.

Bookmakers predict how next season’s Premier League table will look

Solskjaer has been tasked with rediscovering Manchester United’s identity, with the club losing the way since the departure of legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Fergie’s history of making shrewd signings has made way for reckless spending since Ed Woodward took control of the club’s coffers, with the majority of United’s top signings struggling to justify their price tags.

It is rumoured a number of them – Paul Pogba, Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku included – may leave this summer, and Warnock believes the Red Devils should look to replace them with the stars of the future.

The veteran manager also urged Solskjaer to give bigger roles to Marcus Rashford and their other current starlets.

Speaking on Wednesday’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, the Cardiff City boss said: “United have got to go the way it looks they might be going, even though that’s expensive, and that is to bring in the best young players.

“They’ve done the other way, they’ve spent £300m or £400m on players who are supposed to be world stars, and yet they haven’t got a team. They haven’t got a team at all.

“If they bring the young lads they’re talking about bringing in, they can mould them and I think fans will accept 100 per cent effort from young lads.

“Rashford would have to play up front because he’s just the best there is when he’s playing up front.

United have been linked with a host of young players this summer, including Leicester duo James Maddison and Harry Maguire, Swansea winger Daniel James, Crystal Palace defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt

“There are one or two decent players they’re looking at, like the lad from Swansea [Daniel James]. They need to spend £15m or £20m on them to bring these young lads in.

“Ole and the hierarchy have got to realise that is the way forward for Manchester United, because they’re a long way behind.”

Asked if United should bite the bullet and get rid of the likes of Pogba, Sanchez and Lukaku this summer, Warnock added: “Oh, absolutely.

“I wouldn’t touch them with a barge pole.”
