Harry Redknapp reveals Chelsea fans sang ‘Thursday night Channel Five’ as former Tottenham manager walked around pitch after Blues won 2012 Champions League final

Harry Redknapp has explained why going to Munich to watch the 2012 Champions League final was one of the worst decisions of his life.

Redknapp, who was in charge of Tottenham at the time, decided to visit Germany for the European showpiece, which pitted Chelsea against Bayern Munich in the latter’s own home stadium.

It’s a familiar story which does not need repeating, but we’ll do it anyway.

Chelsea, who were stretched thin due to injuries and suspensions, fell behind at the Allianz Arena with just seven minutes left, before Didier Drogba – putting in one of his all-time great performances – headed the Blues level two minutes from time.

The match went to extra-time – during which Petr Cech saved Arjen Robben’s spot-kick – and then penalties.

Chelsea, of course, triumphed, despite Juan Mata missing their first attempt. Drogba scored the winning penalty, further writing his name in Chelsea folklore.

The victory in Munich meant Chelsea became the first London team to win the European Cup, and it also secured the Blues’ qualification for the following season’s tournament as they could only finish sixth in the Premier League.

As only four teams from one country could be in the Champions League at the time – a rule which has since been altered – Chelsea’s qualification knocked Tottenham OUT the 2012/13 edition and down into the Europa League.

This meant Spurs would be playing on Thursday nights in Europe’s secondary competition, and Chelsea supporters mocked Redknapp about this fact after the final whistle blew in Munich.

In the Daily Mail Redknapp explains he was at the Allianz Arena to watch the Champions League final, and that he had to walk around the pitch past the Chelsea faithful – who broke out into a taunting song as he went by.

“In my last year there [Tottenham], we should have got back in the Champions League,” Redknapp writes. “We finished fourth. We should have finished third but we squandered a big lead over Arsenal for third and they went and won at West Brom on the last day.

“Then Chelsea went and won the Champions League and we missed out. That was one of the worst decisions I’ve ever made, going to the game that night in Germany.

“I went with my son Jamie and Graeme Souness, who had a pal with a plane and they were going over so they invited me. We played golf the day before and watched the game in a TV box.

“At the end of the game we had to walk around the pitch at the back of the goal they’d kept all the Chelsea fans in.

“As I walked past they all started singing, ‘Thursday night Channel Five’. It’s quite funny now but not at the time. I was absolutely gutted.”

Less than a month after Chelsea’s victory, Redknapp was sacked by Tottenham.

Massimiliano Allegri’s side are now 21 points clear of second place Napoli with the teams having seven and eight games remaining respectively.

Krzysztof Piatek put Milan ahead at the end of the first half, but Paulo Dybala drew Juventus level from the penalty spot with half an hour remaining.

As time came close to running out, substitute Moise Kean picked up the ball inside the area, took a touch and fired home.

The goal came at the end of a notable week for the 19-year-old as Cagliari fans directed monkey chants towards him in Juve’s 2-0 win on Tuesday.

Kean hit back by scoring his side’s second goal late on, before celebrating in front of the home supporters with his arms aloft.

In a post-match interview, Bonucci said Kean should not have celebrated the way he did and claimed the young striker was partly to blame for the abuse.

However, after being called out for his comments by many faces including Manchester City star Raheem Sterling – who was also racially abused while on international duty with England last month – Bonucci backtracked.

When Kean then netted the winner against Milan on Saturday, the defender sprinted the pitch to ensure he was first on the scene, hugging him in passionate celebration.

PARIS (AFP) -  Japan failed to break down a determined and well-organised Argentine defence in Paris on Monday (June 10) in the first goalless draw of the Women's World Cup.
Japan, finalists in 2015 and winners in 2011, enjoyed almost two thirds of possession in front of a crowd of 25,000, but only forced two saves from goalkeeper Vanina Correa.
Argentina's women, who have never won a match at the World Cup, managed three tame late strikes, none of which tested Ayaka Yamashita.
The result, which earned Argentina's women their very first point in a World Cup, leaves both teams on one point in Group D, behind England who beat Scotland on Sunday (June 9).
When the whistle blew at Paris Saint-Germain's Parc des Princes stadium Argentina's substitutes jumped off the bench to join the players on the pitch at finally getting a point on the World Cup board at the seventh attempt.
"This point is really important for us. I think we're able to reflect upon what Argentina is and what it means as a team," said Estefania Banini, Argentina's captain who was voted player of the match.
"We weren't good enough to break down Argentina's defence today," said Asako Takakura, the Japan coach.
Argentina came out to defend with a back four pressing high up the field, the midfield quartet forming a screen a few yards in front and attacker Banini dropping back to fill the gaps.
It worked.
"Basically we couldn't play any other way against this team," said Carlos Borrello, the Argentina manager.
"We had to keep ourselves back and focused, and be very, very organised with that sort of attitude to come out with a counter-attack. It was satisfying to gain a point in this World Cup." Japan managed only two shots in the first half, neither close to the goal. But Argentina did not attempt any.
When Japanese goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita came out to collect a high and hopeful cross after 40 minutes, the crowd roared.
Banini, short, left-footed and wearing number 10, has inevitably been dubbed the female Lionel Messi, but in build and manner she more closely resembles another left-footed Argentine 10, Diego Maradona.
She was tenacious both with and without the ball and both first-half yellow cards were for rough Japanese challenges on the Argentine captain.
Japan played with more urgency in the second half, pushing Argentina back.
"We don't set out to be defensive against any team," said Takakura. "Of course we have to keep a very solid defence but we don't want to play defensive football. It wasn't in our mindset at all. But the players were cautious today.

 
"In the second half, they realised they had to be more offensive - so their tempo was faster and they attempted more shots at goal." After 50 minutes, Kumi Yokoyama's drive from 35 metres drew a sprawling save from Vanina Correa. The ball ran to Yuki Sugasawa who blasted over from close range.
Then a clever Japanese move gave Yui Hasegawa a shooting chance near the penalty spot but she sliced wide.
As Japan pressed, Argentina had more chances to counter attack. Banini tormented the Japanese defenders with jinking runs, but could not create a clear chance. Argentina were credited with five goal attempts, all in the last 20 minutes, but none were dangerous.
Since the group stage only eliminates eight of the 24 teams, the draw leaves Japan and Argentina needing one victory in their next two games. Both will need to find a way to score.
"We've still got two teams to face and they're going to be really competitive," said Banini. "We have to play really intelligent, compact football and become a really compact team and I think that we can progress.
"We believe that we can continue fighting and we can get more points and not go home with just one." Later Monday Canada face Cameroon in Group E.

Maguire’s stunning volley came in the 62nd minute – just moments before Alim Ozturk was harshly sent off for Sunderland.

But the ten-man hosts hung on to take a narrow advantage into Thursday’s semi-final second leg at Portsmouth.

This was the first time Sunderland have put one over Pompey in four attempts this term.
