Tottenham new stadium latest: Spurs hoping £1billion arena ‘could one day host Super Bowl’

Tottenham’s new stadium is the ‘permanent home for the NFL outside the United States’ and could one day host the Super Bowl, the north London club hope.

Spurs finally move into their new ground next month after an extended redevelopment period which was beset by numerous delays.

The north Londoners had planned to officially open the £1billion structure last September, but they’ve been forced to remain at Wembley until Crystal Palace visit the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on April 3.

At the start of next season, Tottenham will share their stadium with the NFL, having agreed with the league’s governing body to share American football matches between themselves and England’s national stadium.

It will become the first Premier League stadium to host NFL matches, and the ground was designed with the agreement in place; a retractable grass pitch is placed over an artificial pitch, with the latter to be used for NFL games.

And Spurs view the stadium as not just their home – but the home of the NFL outside the United States.

Aidan Mullally, Tottenham’s head of business development, discussed the arena at a panel at Advertising Week Europe, saying: “Over the past three to four years, I think this has been, quite frankly, the most followed stadium in the world.

“When people come [to the first test event] on Sunday, I think they will be truly amazed by how magnificent the stadium is.

“It is an NFL stadium and that’s the key message. From the very start during the design phase, we have had the NFL in mind. The anchor tenant is Tottenham Hotspur, but this is designed to be a permanent home for the NFL outside the US.

“This building will provide brand exposure globally, both with the Premier League but by also pointing deep into key regions and key cities in the US as well.”

And though Mullally refused to confirm Spurs’ desire to one day host the Super Bowl – the NFL’s flagship fixture – it is understood Tottenham wish to do just that.

As quoted by Soccerex, Mullally said on the subject of the stadium hosting high-profile events such as the Super Bowl: “It is unbelievably complicated, but this [stadium] is designed with one purpose in mind, which is to deliver unbelievably good quality events, so we don’t want our venue holding back on any decision.”

The stadium will host its first football match this weekend ahead of the scheduled opening next month.

Tottenham’s Under-18s are facing Southampton on Sunday in the first of two test events the stadium is required to host to be awarded the correct safety certificates for official use.

Hugo Lloris’ latest mistake cost Tottenham a point at Liverpool, and Jermaine Jenas says it’s now time for the goalkeeper to be dropped by Mauricio Pochettino.

Lloris, who captained France to World Cup success last summer, has allowed errors to become an all too frequent part of his game over the past couple of years.

But few have been as gutting as the glovesman’s error against Liverpool, which gifted the Reds a vital win over Pochettino’s side.

Spurs had been by far the better team than Liverpool throughout the second half of Sunday’s encounter, and they really should have been leading only to see Moussa Sissoko waste a glorious chance.

Nonetheless, a draw would still have been a fine result at Anfield, but Lloris made a glaring mistake that moved Liverpool back to the top of the Premier League table.

Mohamed Salah’s tame header was dealt with by Lloris, but the keeper failed to hold the ball and it slipped out of his hands – only to hit Toby Alderweireld and roll into the back of the net.

Though Alderweireld has been credited with the own goal, conceding the injury-time strike is entirely on Lloris’ conscience.

And it’s now time for the France international to be taken out the team by Pochettino, with understudy Paulo Gazzaniga stepping up to replace him.

This is according to Jenas, who played for Spurs when Lloris first joined the club seven years ago.

“Lloris has been at Spurs since 2012, and he has been brilliant at times,” Jenas told BBC Sport. “We are talking about someone who won the World Cup with France last summer, who is skipper of his club and country.

“He should be at the peak of his powers right now but he actually looks more nervous now than he did when he arrived from Lyon seven years ago.

“When people talk about the best keepers in the world, his name always comes up – but I just don’t feel like his performances over the past couple of seasons for Spurs reflect that status, unfortunately.

“Lloris seems to have a reputation based on what he has done in the past that is bigger and better than his current level, and that is a difficult scenario for his manager to deal with.

“But I don’t think Pochettino will be afraid of dropping Lloris, and what might make it easier for him is having Paulo Gazzaniga as his back-up.

“Gazzaniga has played a few games for Spurs this season – 10 in total in all competitions – and has been brilliant every time I’ve seen him. He is probably thinking ‘it is time for me to get my opportunity’ and I think he should do.

“As ruthless as it sounds, if I was Pochettino I would seriously be considering starting the Argentina international in Wednesday’s game against Crystal Palace.

“I know it is a huge occasion because it is Tottenham’s first game at their new stadium, and it is one Lloris will no doubt feel he should be a part of.

“But Tottenham’s priority now is not about sentiment or any of their players’ personal feelings. All that matters is finishing in the top four, because getting Champions League football next season is so important for the club’s future.”

Gazzaniga has made 10 appearances for Spurs this season, including two in the Premier League last September while Lloris was unavailable.

The Argentina international joined the Lilywhites from Southampton in 2017, and was praised for his performances when temporarily promoted to the starting role earlier this term.

Staring at defeat and with their game plan yet to bear fruit, it would have been tempting for Tampines Rovers to just hoof the ball long and hope for a lucky break.
But the Stags stuck to their principle of playing attacking football and managed to rescue a 1-1 draw against Hanoi FC in yesterday's AFC Cup Group F game.
"No, this is the way we play," insisted Tampines head coach Kadir Yahaya, when asked if he considered switching to direct tactics when his team trailed 1-0 just after the hour mark.
"We have to exert our style and philosophy. We cannot go for the long ball just because we are losing. We have to maintain our shape and discipline and to keep moving the ball."
The draw, played before 1,671 fans at Jalan Besar Stadium, meant that Hanoi stay top of the group with four points from two games, ahead of the Stags on goal difference.
In the other Group F match in the Asian Football Confederation's second-tier competition, Cambodia's Nagaworld FC beat Myanmar's Yangon United 2-1 in Phnom Penh.
Against Hanoi, Tampines built their moves with passes from the back even if it meant risking interceptions and counter-attacks from the pacy and technical Vietnamese side.
It was the visitors who struck first in the 62nd minute when goalkeeper Syazwan Buhari could not punch away an inswinging corner and the ball dropped to unmarked Senegalese striker Pape Omar Faye, who tapped home.
Undeterred, Tampines poured men forward and took full advantage of Hanoi's high defensive line in the 76th minute when winger Jordan Webb broke the offside trap, galloped clear before sliding the ball under goalkeeper Nguyen Van Cong and into the net to equalise.
The Vietnamese champions began their AFC Cup campaign in style with a 10-0 hammering of Nagaworld but found Tampines a much harder nut to crack.
But Hanoi coach Chu Dinh Nghiem absolved his team of any blame, saying: "I am happy with my players' performance, but I am just a little bit upset that we deserve the three points but didn't win.
"The main reason is the (artificial) field, which is very difficult to play on."
Tampines' next group game is away at Nagaworld on April 2.

Virgil van Dijk: Liverpool defender and PFA Player of the Year was destined to become world class, say former Groningen team-mates

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk’s excellent season has been recognised in his award for PFA Player of the Year.

His contributions at the back have helped take the Reds to within touching distance of the Premier League and into the Champions League semi-finals.

An inclusion in the PFA Team of the Year was a given and now, he has beaten Raheem Sterling to win the individual award, becoming the third defender to do so in Premier League history.

Van Dijk, who moved to Liverpool for £75million in January 2018, has been widely credited with improving their defence, which this campaign has conceded just 20 goals in 35 matches and losing only once, as they contest a dramatic title race with Manchester City.

While Van Dijk has progressed into what many people are considering the world’s best defender over the past couple of years, the 6ft 4in centre-back actually began his career as a goal-getter in the Erdedivisie with Groningen.

“When Virgil first started playing for the first team he did so as a striker,” Finland international and former team-mate Tim Sparv, once on the books at Southampton, told Dream Team.

“He would come on for the last 15-20 minutes and cause havoc in the opponents’ box. He seemed so confident in his own ability, even though it was his first few games in the team and in a different position to what he was used to. That really impressed me.

“You could see that he handled himself well against more experienced players and didn’t look nervous or out of place, which is always a good sign in a younger player. You got a sense that he was destined for bigger arenas.”

The Holland international made his first team debut for Groningen, coming on for Petter Andersson during a 4–2 victory against ADO Den Haag in May 2011 and the latter says he was well aware of Van Dijk’s potential long before he made his professional debut.

“My first impression of Virgil was when I was injured and training with the second team. I had a good feeling about him from the start. He was very ambitious, humble and easy to talk to,” Andersson remembers.

“From the start he was big and solid on the ball, although he struggled a little bit when it came to his decision making.

“His speed, calmness on the ball and passing ability surprised me. This, together with his obvious physical superiority made him a very complete footballer.”

Van Dijk played 34 times in the league during his final season at Groningen, before completing a move to Scottish giants Celtic for £2.6million in June 2013.

There his reputation grew further as he won two league titles and the League Cup, eventually catching the eye of Southampton and in 2015, he got his first taste of Premier League football.

Three years later he became the world’s most expensive defender and his rise to the top has come as no great surprise to his former colleagues.

“I felt he had the potential to become a really good defender who would go on and play on the biggest stage, but his development has turned out to be even better than I could have imagine,” Sparv said.

“There’s no doubt that he had all the attributes to become a world class defender, but the truth is that I have played against so many major talents throughout my career and it’s very hard to figure out who will succeed at the very top,” Andersson added.

“I would say that what separates him and most of the best players is their mentality, and it’s hard to see that fully at first. His ability to focus, handle adversity, always learn and develop on and off the field is key.”

“I think that at some point along the way he understood what it would take to become a world class defender,” Sparv says.

Liverpool travel to the Nou Camp next Wednesday to take on Barcelona and the match is being billed as Lionel Messi vs Van Dijk and the latter will have to use his considerable physical advantages if he is to prevent the great man from running riot.

“During his first period at Groningen he wasn’t perhaps always aware of the amount of effort that you have to invest, on the pitch and in gym, to actually make it,” Sparv added. “I still remember that myself and a few others used to do extra sessions now and again with our physical coach.

“At first Virgil wasn’t a part of that group, but after a while even he joined in and did the extra stuff that is so important for a young player who is trying to make it in professional football.

“He has definitely matured along the way and as a captain myself I can really see how he’s developed his leadership skills during his career.

That was an aspect that didn’t come naturally to him when he first started at Groningen.

“As a young player you are usually more focused on yourself, which is understandable, but it’s great to see how Virgil has developed into a human being that takes more responsibility for others.”

“The lad has got both his arms around Salah and he has thrown himself to the floor in the end, but he’s had enough of it.

“For me, it’s a definite penalty.
