Emma Hayes praises PSG ultras for stunning atmosphere as Chelsea book place in Champions League semi-finals

Chelsea Women coach Emma Hayes praised the Paris Saint-Germain ultras for creating a stunning atmosphere as the Blues booked their place in the Champions League semi-finals with a dramatic aggregate win at the Stade Jean Bouin.

Chelsea headed into the match two goals to the good, but the hosts netted twice to wipe out their advantage.

But PSG suffered their second European exit in a month after their men’s side were knocked out the Champions League by Manchester United, with Maren Mjelde grabbing a late, late winner for Hayes’ side.

The west Londoners came through the match by the tightest of margins, and Hayes has admitted she was disappointed with how her players performed.

“I was a little disappointed with my team in terms of how we managed the game and I had to work hard as a coach to keep us in the game at times,” she said.

“But I have a united group and a spirited group that fight their way through adversity and we held on through many difficult moments to stay in the game.

“I felt during the last five minutes that we wanted a winner – I could sense it in them, so when Karen Carney dropped it in that space I knew there was only going to be one outcome.”

Chelsea’s poor performance may be, in part, explained by the enthusiastic five-figure crowd at the Stade Jean Bouin.

Incidents at the first leg tie in London last week led to fears of potential crowd trouble at Wednesday’s match, but the PSG fans’ – many of whom were ultras – means of supporting their team were entirely legal.

And Hayes had nothing but praise for those who came to watch their side in action.

“I loved it,” she added. “I was humming the songs as the game went on.

“It adds to the sport when we’re playing in front of crowds like that and I can only encourage and congratulate PSG for that because it certainly gave them a home advantage.”

Captain Chiellini backed the 19-year-old in a post-match interview, though.

Sadio Mane has been in sensational form for Liverpool but will he be wearing their new shirt?

Jurgen Klopp’s side are reportedly in advanced talks with Nike over a long-term kit deal that would be the biggest ever signed by a top-flight side.

Their current contract with New Balance, worth £45million a year, is due to expire at the end of next season, while they are also understood to have held discussions with Adidas and Puma to try and secure the highest possible figure

If as expected, this is to be the last home shirt the American sportswear company, who took over at the start of the 2015/16 campaign, create for Liverpool, than they will have certainly gone out on a high with a simple, bespoke look, as shown by Footy Headlines.

While the past couple of years have seen the shirt boast an oversized v-neck collar, the 2019/20 design offers a simple round neck complete with white trim.

The shirt will return to a more traditional shade of lighter red, while pinstripes are incorporated into the overall look, with the club badge, sponsor logo and Western Union patch on the sleeve finished off in gold.

With the season almost complete, Liverpool could end the season as Premier League champions and are expected to debut the shirt, set for an April release, in one of their remaining four fixtures.

Manchester City 1-0 Tottenham: Phil Foden’s first Premier League goal sees City edge past Spurs to go top

Manchester City 1-0 Tottenham: Phil Foden’s first Premier League goal sees City edge past Spurs to go top

Manchester City edged past Tottenham to get revenge for their Champions League heartbreak in midweek and return to the top of the Premier League.

Phil Foden became City’s third-youngest Premier League goalscorer as he headed home after just five minutes of a tense clash with Spurs, three days after their Champions League classic.

Foden’s strike was ultimately the difference between the sides

3

Foden’s strike was ultimately the difference between the sides

The victory took City back above Liverpool, but the downside was another injury to playmaker Kevin De Bruyne, who limped off with what looked like another knee problem before half-time.

The game lacked the goals of the midweek clash, but there was still plenty of incident, with both sides having numerous chances and penalty appeals turned down.

In the end City were grateful to an impressive performance from goalkeeper Ederson, who made two particularly good saves to deny Son Heung-min.

City – and their fans – were clearly fired up after their Champions League exit and, as they did in Wednesday’s epic, took an early lead.

Foden, unexpectedly brought into the side in place of David Silva, made an immediate impact. The outstanding Bernardo Silva floated a cross into the box and Sergio Aguero nodded across goal for Foden to meet with a powerful diving header at the back post.

Son takes an early shot against City and was a menacing threat on the counter

3

Son takes an early shot against City and was a menacing threat on the counter

It was an ideal start for City, but Spurs, who made five changes with injured goalkeeper Hugo Lloris among those to drop out, showed plenty of energy themselves.

Son capitalised on an error by John Stones to force a save from Ederson and and Christian Eriksen also tested the goalkeeper when he might have made more of the attention of Aymeric Laporte.

Laporte then did much better when Son broke through again, producing a perfectly-timed tackle to deny the Korean a shooting chance.

Silva continued to cause Spurs problems and Jan Vertonhgen was perhaps lucky to get away with a clumsy challenge on the Portuguese in the area before Foden shot at Spurs back-up keeper Paulo Gazzaniga.

Silva also shot at the keeper before De Bruyne appeared to jar his knee attempting an effort on goal. The Belgian slumped to the turf and was immediately replaced by Fernandinho as City manager Pep Guardiola took no chances, but the signs did not look good for the 27-year-old.

Spurs could have been level before the break as Son raced clear again, but Ederson smothered his shot.

City had two more penalty appeals early in the second half. First the ball hit Vertonhgen’s hand after he had blocked an Aguero strike and Foden went down in a challenge from Juan Foyth. Referee Michael Oliver gave nothing, as he did when Spurs claimed Kyle Walker had handled in the area.

Spurs pressed further with Eriksen having a shot blocked and Lucas Moura firing into the crowd.

It was a crucial win for Pep Guardiola’s side

3

Raheem Sterling had a quiet game but he moved up front after Aguero was substituted and was denied in front of goal by a reaction save from Gazzaniga at point-blank range.

Spurs’ frustrations continued as Lucas Moura blazed over.

The game ended in scrappy fashion with a number of bad challenges and Sterling getting involved in some pushing and shoving with Spurs players.

It suggested both sides had probably seen enough of each other after three meetings in just over a week, but City held on three vital points.

Manchester United news: Paul Pogba not worried what critics Graeme Souness, Roy Keane and others say

Paul Pogba has dismissed criticism from pundits about his performances, saying ‘they are paid to say things in front of the camera.’

The Manchester United midfielder, who played in the 1-1 draw with Chelsea, has often found himself the target of scrutiny since he returned to the club in 2016 for £89million.

Pogba has dismissed his critics

Pogba, who has strongly been linked with a move to Real Madrid, was named in the PFA Team of the Year for this season to the surprise of many and has scored 16 goals this season.

Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness has been one of Pogba’s most frequent critics and advised the club to sell him and sign two £50m players in his Sunday Times column this weekend.

After Pogba issued an apology to supporters following the humiliating 4-0 defeat to Everton, former Man United captain Roy Keane gave a typically candid response, when he was on pundit duty for the Manchester derby last week.

“I wouldn’t believe a word he says,” Keane told Sky Sports. “There’s no meaning, no meaning behind it. I don’t even think he believed what he was saying there.

“He is a big problem, no doubt about it.

“You’ve got to run back when you’re defending. He said it got a bit heated after the game against Everton; I heard they were actually throwing their hair gel at each other.”

However, the World Cup winner has remained unconcerned despite the constant fault-finding he has to deal with.

Speaking to French outlet RMC Sport, Pogba said: “Criticism from British pundits? No worries. They are paid to say things in front of the camera.

“I’m just on the pitch. They can say what they want, they are paid for it. I’m not paid to talk. I get paid to be on the field and fight for my team. That’s all.”
