Portsmouth 2-2 Sunderland (5-4 on pens): Pompey clinch Checkatrade Trophy on penalties in dramatic Wembley final

Portsmouth clinched the Checkatrade Trophy with a dramatic 5-4 shootout victory over Sunderland at Wembley.

Lee Cattermole saw the Black Cats’ second penalty saved by Craig MacGillivray as a thrilling final was decided on penalties following a 2-2 draw after extra time.

A crowd of 85,021 – a record for the EFL Trophy final – saw Aiden McGeady’s free-kick put Sunderland ahead in the first half, before Nathan Thompson levelled with a stooping header eight minutes from the end of normal time.

In a lively second period of extra time, Jamal Lowe’s stunning lob put Pompey in front, only for McGeady to slot in a last-gasp equaliser.

Penalty drama followed and Portsmouth were faultless, scoring all five to ensure they lifted the trophy.

Sunderland posed more of an attacking threat in the opening stages, with Lewis Morgan testing MacGillivray for the first time with a well-struck volley in the 21st minute.

McGeady was pulling the strings for the Black Cats and won the free-kick from which he opened the scoring in the 38th minute.

The Republic of Ireland international’s curling strike took a slight deflection off the shoulder of Omar Bogle and that was enough to take it out of MacGillivray’s reach.

Portsmouth started the second half with fresh impetus and Bogle saw a header blocked on the line by defender Reece James, although the whistle had already gone for a foul against the forward.

Brett Pitman came agonisingly close to an equaliser on the hour when he controlled a Lowe knock-down and fired a shot against the base of the right-hand post.

Pompey substitute Gareth Evans neatly beat his marker and raced forward before drilling a shot wide with just over 10 minutes remaining.

And he played a part in a deserved equaliser shortly afterwards, standing up a cross to the back post for Thompson to power in a header.

Portsmouth thought they had won it with six minutes of extra time remaining when Lowe controlled a long ball forward and lobbed goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin.

But there was still time for Sunderland to snatch an equaliser and send the game to penalties as McGeady controlled Charlie Wyke’s lay-off, beat his marker and slotted past the keeper.

After Cattermole was denied by the keeper, it eventually fell to Oliver Hawkins to win it for Portsmouth and he duly obliged.

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) - Esperance won the CAF Champions League in Tunisia Saturday (June 1) after Wydad Casablanca refused to continue playing on 60 minutes because VAR was unavailable to judge a disallowed equaliser.
The Tunisian side were leading 1-0 in the second leg of the final and 2-1 overall when play was halted, and after a 90-minute delay the referee awarded the match to the home side.
Tunisian media reported that officials were aware before the match that the VAR (video assistant referee) system was not working, but the players seemingly did not know.
It is the first time in the 55-year history of the elite African club competition that a match in the home-and-away final series has not been completed.
Wydad believed they had levelled on 59 minutes when Walid el Karti headed a cross into the net. TV replays confirmed he was onside, but might have fouled an opponent with his shoulder.
The Moroccan team insisted that the Gambian referee check with VAR, apparently unaware that the often-controversial system was unavailable.
Wydad substitutes and 69-year-old coach Faouzi Benzarti joined in the protests and police foiled an attempted assault by a spectator wearing the red and gold of Esperance.
Plastic bottles containing liquid were also flung toward the Wydad players and coaches as tempers flared.
At one stage, CAF president Ahmad Ahmad and the bosses of Esperance and Wydad spoke on the side of the pitch without succeeding in getting the match restarted.
The Wydad players and coaches eventually went to the changing room and, after a long delay, the referee indicated that Esperance had been awarded the match.
There was widespread criticism of the debacle on social media with many tweets saying that calling off the club showpiece brought shame to African football.

 
The abandonment occurred just 20 days before an expanded 24-team Africa Cup of Nations kicks off in Egypt, with VAR scheduled to be used during the knockout phase.
VAR had played a major role in the first leg of the final in Morocco last weekend, with referrals ruling out a goal by Wydad and later appeals for a penalty by the Moroccans.
The Egyptian referee of that match was subsequently banned for six months with CAF saying his performance was "poor".
Three-time former champions Esperance took the lead on 41 minutes when Youcef Belaili curled a shot into the net from the edge of the box at the Stade Olympique.
The Tunisian outfit dominated the opening half and fully deserved to lead at half-time in the 60,000-seater stadium.
But the way Esperance ultimately won the competition for a second successive time took much of the gloss off the achievement.
They are only the fourth club - after Al Ahly of Egypt, TP Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Enyimba of Nigeria - to achieve back-to-back Champions League triumphs.
And by going through their 2019 CAF campaign unbeaten - equalling the achievement of the 1994 squad - Esperance became the first club to win the competition twice without losing a match.
It was also a special night for 37-year-old coach Moine Chaabani, who became the first from north Africa to win two Champions League finals in a row.
Tunis citizens reacted to the triumph by pouring into the streets and screaming joyfully while cars and motorbikes crisscrossed the capital, honking horns.
Many Esperance supporters flocked to the district where the club was formed 100 years ago in a cafe of the same name.

Manchester United are prepared to listen to offers for striker Romelu Lukaku this summer, according to reports.

The Belgian seems open to a move away from Old Trafford and United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has promised a ‘ruthless’ overhaul in the next transfer window.

The Daily Telegraph writes that Inter Milan, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich are believed to be interested but the Red Devils will only let Lukaku go if an acceptable bid arrives.

Lukaku’s representative Federico Pastorello appeared to be putting the player on the market when admitting in a TV interview earlier this month, saying the striker’s future was ‘very open’ and a move to Italy appealed to Lukaku as he is someone who loves to know a different culture and different football.

Lukaku has previously talked up the prospect of playing in Italy in the past.

Antonio Conte, who is also represented by Pastorello, has been linked with the Inter and Juventus jobs and it is understood he would be interested in signing Lukaku if he got either of those jobs.

The former Chelsea boss missed out on Lukaku when the player decided to choose Old Trafford over Stamford Bridge following an initial £75million move from Everton.

The Toffees will also be keen for Lukaku to make the move as they stand to make an additional £5m windfall under the terms of the deal if he was to leave United this summer.

Lukaku is in line to face his former club at Goodison Park on Sunday, a game you can listen to live on talkSPORT, kick-off 1:30pm.

However, he has fallen below Marcus Rashford in the pecking order as United’s first choice striker since Solskjaer took charge of the club in December.

The sale of Lukaku could also help fund new signings in what looks set to be a very busy summer for the club.

But there is the obstacle of finding a club that would pay the sizeable transfer fee combined with the player’s wages. Lukaku, 25, currently earns £255,000 a week at United.

United may also be open to offers for flop Alexis Sanchez but the Chilean’s £500,000 a week wages will make it very difficult to sell him unless there are big compromises.

The likes of Antonio Valencia, Marcos Rojo, Ander Herrera and Juan Mata are among those likely or expected to go.

Meanwhile, uncertainty surrounds Eric Bailly’s future as well as goalkeeper David de Gea, who is coming up to the final year of his contract.

AMSTERDAM • Cristiano Ronaldo's return to fitness could be vital to Juventus' bid to end their 23-year wait for a Champions League trophy as they head to Ajax today with uncertainty over whether the most expensive player in the club's history will play.
The €100 million (S$152.5 million) summer signing from Real Madrid has not played in a month for the Serie A leaders since he scored a second-leg hat-trick to dump Atletico Madrid out in the round of 16.
He was rested in the subsequent 2-0 league defeat at Genoa and then picked up a thigh injury on international duty two weeks ago.
But Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri believes that the Portugal captain will be raring to go ahead of the first leg of the quarter-final, the clubs' first meeting in 16 years.
He said: "He (Ronaldo) always feels ready. We are confident of having him at Ajax on Wednesday.
"In matches of this kind, he gets really excited and enthusiastic. Having him gives us a great advantage."
His confidence also stems from the 34-year-old's return to full-time training on Monday and he boarded the team plane that flew to the Netherlands yesterday.
Teammate Joao Cancelo also told Sky Italia that Ronaldo had "committed himself to do everything possible" to be there and help the team.
The Portugal defender, who confirmed he had shrugged off a calf issue, added: "Cristiano's training, he's a serious professional.
"I really think he'll be called up. We'll see if he plays from the first minute or come on later. The coach will decide. I am fit and ready to play, I will play in Amsterdam."
Ronaldo himself has given no updates on his injury, apart from a short video posted on his social media accounts, looking relaxed while spending time off with his partner Georgina Rodriguez and son.
If the record scorer (124) in the competition can take to the field, it will be a psychological boost for Juventus, who have gone on record saying that they moved for him last July with the sole purpose of ending their barren run in Europe.
Allegri does, however, have other attacking options in Argentina forward Paulo Dybala, Croatian striker Mario Mandzukic and Italy forward Federico Bernardeschi.
He also has a trump card in Moise Kean, one of the more exciting players to burst onto the Italian football scene in years. The 19-year-old has taken his chance in Ronaldo's absence with five goals in as many league games for Juventus, who are just one point away from sealing an eighth straight Italian title.
