Vincent Kompany: Pep Guardiola to hold contract talks with Manchester City captain over a beer

Pep Guardiola has confirmed he will hold talks with Vincent Kompany at the end of the season to decide where the Manchester City legend’s future lies.

Kompany, the defender, is nearing the final year of his existing deal but proved he remains good enough for City by scoring a stunning winning goal against Leicester to return Guardiola’s side to the top of the Premier League table ahead of the final day.

Kompany scored the most unlikely of goals to send Manchester City above Liverpool once again

He has played a key role for City during the title run-in, starting five of the previous six matches, even though his position throughout much of the campaign has been, undeniably, a backup.

The Belgium international, at 33, is clearly not as good as he used to be, and there have been suggestions he will be allowed to leave City when his deal runs out.

Pep Guardiola tells talkSPORT ‘the media desire Liverpool to be champions’

His recent performances could change that thinking, and Guardiola confirmed he will hold talks with Kompany when the campaign comes to a close.

And rather than sitting around in a office trying to decide the defender’s future, the pair will instead go for a beer to hold talks.

“We will finish the season and after we are going to talk,” Guardiola revealed after Kompany’s 25-yard strike downed Leicester on Monday night.

“We spoke with him three weeks ago, one month ago. We spoke fluently two or three times. We are going to take a beer together and decide what is best — especially for him and for the club.

“This club is what it is because of people like Vincent. At the end of the season, after the FA Cup we will decide the best for both parties.”

Kompany is understood to be willing to take a pay cut to ensure he remains at the Etihad past the end of the season.

Since joining City from Hamburg 11 years ago, Kompany has established himself as one of the most legendary figures in the club’s history.

He’s made over 350 appearances, scoring 20 goals, and captained City to seven major honours – with another two likely to be won before the end of this season.

Herrera’s protracted signing from Athletic Bilbao was completed in 2014 when United met his £28.85million buyout clause.

He has gone on to make 187 appearances for the club and won the FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League.

The midfielder has established himself as a key member of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer̢۪s team and has made 14 appearances under the new manager.

Solskjaer would appear to be been on keeping Herrera as he sees him as a vital part of the squad.

“His energy and tenaciousness is vital for us,” Solskjaer said recently. “And that’s why he plays, more or less, every single game. He has loads of energy, he can cover the right-hand side, he runs forward.”

Everton 1-0 Arsenal: Toffees boss Marco Silva says ‘main man’ Dominic Calvert-Lewin is improving in every match he plays

Everton boss Marco Silva gave special praise to Dominic Calvert-Lewin, claiming the striker is improving every match he plays following their win at home to Arsenal.

The Toffees rose to ninth in the Premier League table after winning the match 1-0 thanks to Phil Jagielka’s early strike.

Calvert-Lewin, 22, led the line effectively and caused the visitors’ defence problems throughout the game.

The striker has started Everton’s last six matches – winning four, drawing one and losing one – scoring two goals in the process.

And although he wasn’t on the scoresheet against Arsenal, Silva stressed the whole team performed well but gave a special mention to Calvert-Lewin.

Speaking after the game, Silva said on Calvert-Lewin: “He’s growing, he’s developing and it’s my job to help him keep developing as a football player and he had a very good game.

â€Å“All of them did well but Dominic is just enjoying what he’s doing.

â€Å“He’s working hard to do what I ask him because it’s not an easy thing to be our main man [up front] but he’s working hard and achieving some things in each match.

“He’s improving each match and he’s doing everything that I want.”

Real Madrid transfer news: Eden Hazard the preferred signing ahead of Paul Pogba, according to fan poll

A summer move for Chelsea’s Eden Hazard should be Real Madrid’s priority and not Paul Pogba, according to an AS.com poll.

A survey conducted by the Spanish news outlet saw 160,000 Real supporters take part in the survey to determine who would be the club’s most important purchase with Hazard, Pogba, Luka Jovic, Christian Eriksen, Neymar and Tanguy Ndombélé among the choices.

Eden Hazard topped an AS poll to discover who Real Madrid would prefer the club to sign this summer

Unsurprisingly, Chelsea ace Hazard topped the poll, taking just over 30 per cent of the vote, while Eintracht Frankfurt striker Jovic was second.

The Serbian forward, 21, has been in stunning form this season, scoring 17 goals in 31 Bundesliga matches and 27 in all competitions.

Tottenham playmaker Eriksen was third. The Denmark international is being tipped to take from Luka Modric as Real’s midfield pivot, while Neymar and Ndombélé finished fourth and fifth respectively.

Last on the list, was Pogba who took just 11 per cent of the vote, having flirted with the idea of moving to Real since Zinedine Zidane returned as manager in March.

Pogba is hoping to force through a summer transfer to Real, by making it clear he will accept a pay cut, with the World Cup winner reportedly earning around £290,000-per-week.

Chelsea news: Maurizio Sarri’s furious reaction as Ruben Loftus-Cheek goes down with injury during friendly

Maurizio Sarri appeared to be furious on the sidelines after Ruben Loftus-Cheek picked up an injury during Chelsea’ friendly against New England Revolution on Wednesday evening

The midfielder left the stadium on crutches with his left foot in a protective boot amid fears he has suffered ligament damage –  and early reports suggest the 23-year-old is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Loftus-Cheek is facing a lengthy spell on the sideliens

The injury has come as a bitter blow to Sarri, whose side face Arsenal in the final of the Europa League in Baku in a week’s time

And the Italian manager was clearly furious on the sidelines at the sight of Loftus-Cheek heaped on the floor in agony.

While the England international was down receiving treatment, the Blues boss walked back to the dugout and threw his coat on the floor in rage.

Loftus-Cheek has had several minor injuries this season but has recently become an integral player in Sarri’s line-up in recent months

However, it is now almost certain the playmaker will miss the crucial match against Arsenal on May 23, and potentially a great deal longer.

However, in some good news for Blues fans, reports suggest Callum Hudson-Odoi is close to penning a new five-year deal at Stamford Bridge.

The youngster will reportedly sign the long-term deal to commit his future to the Blues and put an end to rumours linking him with a move away in the summer.

Manchester City starlet Phil Foden should be in England senior squad after Callum Hudson-Odoi call-up, says Micky Gray

Manchester City starlet Phil Foden should be ‘given an opportunity’ in the senior England squad after Callum Hudson-Odoi’s surprise call-up, says talkSPORT pundit Micky Gray.

Chelsea youngster Hudson-Odoi received his first call-up to the England Under-21s squad last week, but was drafted into Gareth Southgate̢۪s senior side on Monday after four players withdrew through injury.

The 18-year-old, who has scored five goals in 19 games for the Blues this season, could make his full Three Lions debut in one of the upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers against the Czech Republic and Montenegro – which would make him England’s eighth youngest player.

2

Hudson-Odoi could make his England debut against the Czech Republic or Montenegro

But his move to the senior team has sparked a debate over ‘giving away’ England caps to inexperienced players.

Hudson-Odoi has played only 119 minutes of Premier League football for Chelsea this season. He has yet to start a league match and has played the majority of his games in the Europa League and cup competitions.

However, ‘age doesn’t matter’ to former defender Gray, who believes Manchester City starlet Foden should also get a chance to prove himself at international level.

The 18-year-old midfielder has experienced even less game time in the Premier League than Hudson-Odoi this season – 98 minutes across ten substitute appearances – but has six goals and two assists in 23 games in all competitions for City.

â€Å“If you’re going to give people like Hudson-Odoi an opportunity in the England squad, I think Phil Foden is ready,” Gray – a three-cap England international – told talkSPORT host Jim White.

â€Å“I’ve always said, if a player is good enough they are ready, it doesn’t matter what age they are.

‘Mauricio Pochettino DESERVES to be backed in the transfer window’, says Tottenham legend Darren Anderton

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino deserves to be backed in the transfer window this summer, insists club legend Darren Anderton.

The former Spurs and England midfielder joined talkSPORT after a ‘perfect night’ for the club, as they opened their new £1billion stadium with a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace.

Heung-min Son scored the first goal in Spurs’ new stadium

2

Heung-min Son scored the first goal in Spurs’ new stadium

The result lifted Spurs back up to third in the Premier League table and ended a torrid run of five games without victory.

That familiar mid-season dip would have been enough to convince fans they need to improve the team this summer – not like they needed much convincing – after two barren transfer windows.

Tottenham̢۪s consistent position near the top of the table, even challenging for the title earlier in the campaign, is quite incredible given their lack of spending compared to their rivals.

But Anderton believes the time has come to reward Pochettino for his hard work by giving him cash to splash in the summer.

Asked if Pochettino deserves to be backed in the transfer window, Anderton said on Thursday’s Sports Breakfast: â€Å“Yes he certainly does.

â€Å“Pochettino has done unbelievably well since he’s come to the club.

â€Å“He’s taken Spurs on and all the players who were there before he’s improved individually.

â€Å“But they’ve got to keep improving the team.

â€Å“The new stadium was built for Champions League football, not the Europa League, so they’ve got to get into that next year for sure.

â€Å“In order to bring new players in as well, if you want the best players in the world you’ve got to play in that competitions.
